“Oooh it’s a ‘he’? Is it serious?”

“Well, he just upgraded my flight on the sly, and I think he’s trying to impress me. Do you think it’s serious – or am I making too much of things?”

“It sounds like he is definitely serious,” Austin murmured. “Upgrades are a big deal – and if he’s meeting your parents? Hmm. Could be very interesting indeed.”

Giselle searched his eyes silently and stared at him. Was he still playing with her? Was this trying to hint at how he felt?

Neither spoke.

It was like the conversation had just died on both ends. She didn’t know what to say, and he’d grown quiet - as if he was afraid to continue on this pathway.

“Sir?” The flight attendant walked through, pausing at their row. “We need you both to buckle. The captain has the ‘fasten seatbelt light on’ and we are preparing to take off.”

“Certainly,” Austin said distractedly, still looking at Giselle.

“A-Austin…?” her voice trembled, feeling very exposed and insecure.

“Sir – if you and your wife could please buckle up? Once we are in the air, we’ll be bringing around warm nuts and champagne,” the flight attendant pressed again.

… Wife?

They were still sitting there – and neither of them argued over the term, and how it fell between them. It seemed to echo in her head, bouncing against something within her, almost like it belonged… and she wanted it.

“Sir? Ma’am? The plane is waiting to depart. Do you need assistance?”

“No,” he said finally, moving to buckle… and the moment was gone.

Giselle grabbed her buckle, latching it, and slid open the shade on the airplane window – just so she couldn’t look at his face, nor could he see hers. As they took off and got above the clouds, she finally heard Austin’s voice quietly beside her.

“Man… she used the ‘W’ word, just kind of tossed it out there like it was nothing,” he breathed and before she could comment on it, telling him to relax, the flight attendant was handing out champagne flutes to the first-class passengers.

Austin handed her one and took one for himself.

“I’m sure it was just an assumption,” Giselle began nervously.

She was trying not to let it show that her hand was trembling at the way he was acting at the term ‘wife’ being bandied about by the flight attendant so easily… nor the fact that he didn’t say anything. Usually a guy would interrupt with a firm ‘that’s not my wife’statement.

Austin didn’t.

“An assumption that I’d wantwarmnuts?” he began. “That’s a little bold. Of course, I’d want warm nuts. What other ‘W’ word would you be referring to?”

The people in front of them started laughing.

“A window seat?” Austin said innocently, taking a sip of his champagne. “I don’t think anyone brought up walruses, watermelons, or whiskers.”

“You know what I’m talking about.”

“Walnuts? Water buffalo? Wyoming?”

“Austin…”

“Wainscoting? You think?”

“No.”

“Hmmm. I have to say that any other ‘W’ words have quite slipped my mind.”

“Good. Forget it.”
