He opened the case and hesitated – glancing at her.

“Oh Giselle,” he breathed, smiling widely. “I love them…”

“I thought the yellow polarized lenses were perfect because you are my ray of sunshine each day,” she smiled impishly. “And you gave me little suns – so I guess I’m your stinkin’ ray of sunshine too.”

He laughed easily and slipped them on.

“How do I look?” he said in a mockingly deep voice.

“Oh-so debonaire,” she whispered breathlessly, laying the back of her hand to her forehead to pretend to faint… causing him to laugh once more as he put them back in the protective case. “You really like them?”

“I love them. They are perfect and I can wear them all the time.”

She stood there, her shoulder to his, in this little haven that they’d occupied for a brief moment each day… and heard his voice, faint and nervous.

“I wish there was mistletoe,” he breathed softly – and she looked at his profile in wonder. “Is that so wrong? I’m just so happy and I feel the need to express it, but there’s this darn fence, cutting me off from everything I treasure. I wish I could hug you, hold your hand, or cuddle like a couple of teenagers…”

“Austin?”

“Yeah?”

“Why don’t we try it – despite the fence?” she whispered bravely, staring up at him. “Because I wish you could kiss me, too.”

He turned slightly – and she did the same as both leaned towards the fence. This felt so weird, so strange, because she couldn’t embrace him fully and he couldn’t hold her at all. His lips brushed against hers softly and felt him sigh heavily.

“This feels so wrong,” he began sadly – and Giselle swore her heart stopped at his words, only to see the burning desire and regret in his eyes. “I want to sink my fingers in your hair and hold you close when I finally taste your lips… and it feels so clinical when I cannot touch you. Like I’m close, but still so far out of reach. It’s almost cruel,” he grimaced painfully, his eyes darting along the perimeter of the fence looking for an ‘out’.

“I understand,” she breathed, not moving away as they remained so close to each other, trying to kiss the other person. “I want to touch your face or pull you to me, or wrap my arms around your shoulders…”

“I’m gonna need a cold shower…” he laughed softly, trying to kiss her again, except she was laughing too. His finger reached through the fence and touched her cheek barely as the announcements began alerting everyone about ‘lights out’.

“I’m gonna yank those speakers down one of these days,” he confessed wryly, smiling at her. “I hate them - and the interruption every single night.”

“I know.”

“Okay, quick stuff we need to talk about,” he breathed, still not moving away. “I’ll find out tomorrow about my leave and email you. Then I’m booking the tickets for us, so be prepared to cuddle for fourteen hours on a plane with your friend.”

“I think I can handle it,” she smiled.

“Prep yo’ self…” he taunted devilishly in a soft voice. “Do you care if it’s a window or aisle seat?”

“No.”

“I might need some information from you… like a date of birth and other stuff, but I’ll need to check. I usually book American Airlines or Delta, so if we can both look – send me the info as soon as possible, because we are getting out of here together for a real rendezvous -without a dang fence.”

“Whatever shall we do?” she said innocently with wide eyes, causing him to laugh again.

“I can think of lots of things… but the first is holding hands, then hugging, and finally? I’m kissing you.”

“That sounds perfect.”

“Go head inside, my sweet,” he breathed, leaning forward to barely brush his lips against hers again. “I want to make sure you are safe.”

“No one is going to touch me on base. We’re safe here.”

“I know. It’s a guy thing… please.”

“We need to both go,” she said, leaning forward to kiss him once more. “I really hate this fence.”
