“Are you a terrible dancer?”

“The worst,” she hissed playfully and treasured his laugh as he shook his head. “I’m only warning you.”

Stunned, he rolled up the package of gummy worms and held it through the fence towards her.

“Here, Giselle…”

“Oh Austin, that’s sweet – but no. Those are yours.”

“Give a poor guy a break,” he teased. “I’m trying, you know. ‘Sweets for the sweet’ and all that? Take them and think of me.”

“Worms?”

“Exactly,” he grinned. “Take them and enjoy… I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Same time?”

“It’s a date.”

“Now, I think I’ll go check my email and see if I can taunt my favorite pen pal before I turn in…”

“Oh mercy,” Giselle laughed and accepted the bag of gummy worms, meeting his eyes in the dim light. “Thank you.”

“We’ll have that dance someday,” he breathed. “I promise.”

“Knights, paladins, castles, and fairytales, right?”

“Exactly.”

“You are too sweet.”

“Better than those worms,” he smiled. “Goodnight, my sweet Giselle.”

“Sweet dreams, Austin,” she acknowledged, unable to hide the flush of pleasure that hearing him call her ‘his sweet Giselle’made her feel. Walking back towards the barracks, she heard a faint tune whistling in the darkness… and realized he was whistling ‘A Whole New World’fromAladdin.

What a mysterious and charming man,she thought, smiling to herself.

Disappearing inside the building, she saw that the computer in the clinic was available and slipped inside to check her email. Sure enough, that sneak had managed to write her back.

Smiling and chomping on a gummy worm, she clicked on it.

My sweet Giselle,

Let me give this a try again… and we’ll see what you think as I try to impress my harshest critic.

Once upon a time…

Long, long ago…

There was a HANDSOME knight…

And a frustrated but BREATHTAKING paladin with infinite patience…

Who put up with the devilish rascal, because it made them both incredibly happy to take five minutes a day to see each other, share brief messages, and snack on unexpected delights in the moonlight…

(Does it count if it’s a run-on sentence?)

Austin
