Nothing else existed.

Except the two of us joined as one.

I couldn’t tell where she began and I ended.

When I drew back to look at her, flushed and writhing underneath me, I almost came undone then and there. Her eyes flew open, and she pinned me with a look that had my stomach giving an odd little twinge. A strange swell of emotion rose within the center of my chest as she sunk her nails into my sides and moaned. I made a low unintelligible sound and threw my head back.

The sound of my heavy breathing echoed in the room as I emptied myself into her. Slowly, I eased out of her and collapsed onto the mattress next to her. Martha tucked herself into my side and threw one leg up over me. I stroked her back, and she played with the hair on the nape of my neck.

I fell asleep to the smell of her on my skin.

The next morning, when my phone jolted me awake, I sat up, drenched in a cold sweat. With a growl, I swatted at the nightstand until my phone fell silent. I rubbed a hand over my face and used my other hand to reach across the mattress for Martha. Unfortunately, the mattress was cold, and the other side of the bed was not wrinkled.

Both eyes flew open as I stared at the spot where she had slept a few hours ago.

I called out to her but was met with silence.

I exhaled, threw the covers off, and reached for my boxers. After snapping them on, I wandered around the room in search of her. Once I made my way back to the bed, I raked a finger through my hair and wandered what to do next.

Obviously, Martha felt like she couldn’t trust me, or she wouldn’t have left again.

But I wasn’t letting her disappear again.

With a shake of my head, I hopped into the shower and spent the entire time thinking of her and how good it felt to be around her. By the time I came out of the shower and got dressed, I was determined to find her and find the answers I was looking for. In the car, I rattled off the address to Gent’s, leaned back against the couch, and waited. When the car pulled up outside, I hurried out and pushed my way through the doors.

Once the elevator doors pinged open, Banks was waiting for me, an expectant look on his face. “I’m glad you were able to come to a decision so quickly, and I’m glad you didn’t let the misunderstanding yesterday interfere with business.”

I followed him into his office and waited until the door was shut to spin around to face him. “I need Martha Auden’s contact information now.”

Banks sat back behind his desk and raised an eyebrow. “So, I was right. The two of you do have a thing.”

I crossed the distance between us and scowled at him. “That’s none of your concern. I still want that information.”

Banks nodded towards a folder on his desk, and I snatched it up. “You’re wasting your time with her.”

I scanned the folder before I snapped it shut. “You’re the one who is a waste of time, Banks. And by the way, I am not going to be investing in Gent’s.”

Banks’ mouth fell open.

He opened and closed it several times, but nothing came out.

Without waiting for a response, I hurried out of the office and back to the car waiting for me by the curb. I rattled off another address, sat back, and watched as the world raced past, a blur of shapes and colors. When the driver pulled up to an apartment building on the quieter side of the city, I paused with my hand on the knob.

What if Martha didn’t want to see me?

I had come all the way here, and I couldn’t stand the thought of her turning me away. Yet, I had come too far to turn back without any answers. After a deep breath, I pushed the door open and took the stairs two at a time. On the third floor, I saw the back of Martha’s head, and my pulse quickened.

Until the front door opened, and a little boy came rushing out and threw himself at her middle. She stumbled back, righted herself, and held her to him. “Hi, sweetheart. How was your day?”

“I missed you, mommy.” He leaned back to look at her, and his entire face lit up. “I waited for you to have breakfast.”

Martha took his hand in hers and led him inside. “Let’s go eat then. I’m starving.”

The door clicked shut behind them, and I flinched. After a brief hesitation, I descended back down the stairs, unable to ignore the ringing in my ears. When I stepped outside, the driver was still waiting for me against the car. I stared right through him and looked at my surroundings.

Why did Martha’s son look familiar?

With a shake of my head, I got into the car and stared out the window. Half of me was tempted to go back around and bang on the door until Martha opened up. The other half knew that if I wanted the truth about her son’s father, I was going to have to be patient. I wanted Martha to myself and knowing she had a kid didn’t change that.
