He appeared in the entrance hall in his workout gear. It was clear he’d just come from the gym. Before either of us could say anything, he hurried across the hall and swept Olivia up in his arms.

“Thank fuck,” he breathed. “Do you have any idea how worried I’ve been?”

I had forgotten—he hadn’t heard from us since before the crash. Of course, he would be more worried about that than anything else right now.

Olivia freed herself from his embrace. “It’s all thanks to Jake,” she told him. “He landed the plane when the engine went out, Danny. If not for him, I would have died.”

“Thank you, man,” Danny said seriously to me. “I owe you one.”

I hoped he still felt that way in a minute. “We need to talk to you about something.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes,” Olivia assured him. “It’s better than okay. But we do need to catch you up on some things. Can we sit down?”

We all went into the kitchen and took seats around the table.

“You’re making me nervous,” Danny admitted.

“There’s nothing to be nervous about,” Olivia said. “But the thing is, Danny…” She sighed. “Try not to freak out, okay?”

“Don’t give me a reason to freak out.”

“I’m pregnant.”

He stared at her for a moment.

And then, more quickly than I would have imagined possible, he looked at me.

“Don’t freak out,” Olivia repeated quickly.

“Is this your handiwork?” Danny demanded.

“I warned you, Olivia,” he snapped.

“It’s nothing to get worked up over,” I told him quickly.

“No?” He looked like his head was about to pop off.

“Danny,” Olivia said. “We’re together.”

“You’rewhat?”

“We’ve been sort of… seeing each other.” It was a generous characterization of what we’d been doing, but I agreed with the decision to frame it that way. There was no way this would end well if she told Danny we’d been fucking around.

I could take Danny in a fight,probably.That didn’t mean I wanted one.

Danny looked from Olivia to me and back again.

“What the fuck, so you two are in a relationship?” he asked.

I nodded. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Olivia nodding with me. It was hard to explain how good it felt to see her acknowledging the legitimacy of what we had, saying it was something real and something that mattered. I knew she wasn’t just doing that for Danny’s sake, either. She meant it.

And so did I.

“Are you going to get married?” Danny asked.

“Well—we haven’t really gotten that far yet,” Olivia admitted.
