Rowdy snorted and helped me from the table. “I’m sure your boss will understand if you take the rest of the day off.”

I stiffened at that while eyeing him warily, but he didn’t notice as he crouched on his haunches and rifled through my discarded clothes before finding my ruined panties. I cringed, but when he held them open for me to step in, I obeyed and held onto his powerful shoulders for balance. My pants were next, and then he rose to help me into my shirt.

“Was this some kind of trick?” I finally asked once I was dressed again and felt more like we were on equal footing.

“What?”

“This.” I waved around the room in answer. “Sending me down here. Setting the trap. What we just did. Was it some kind of trick to get rid of me?”

“Okay, first of all, I don’t just go around putting my mouth on any female. Second, if I wanted you gone, you’d be gone. I don’t beat around the bush because it takes too much time. I prefer to go for the jugular, so no, making you come wasn’t some trick, Atlas.”

I chewed on my lip before nodding. “Can I ask you another question?”

He sighed. “I guess.”

“How did you know I’d do…that?” My orgasms, whenever Sutton could be bothered to care, had been subpar andnothinglike that.

“Squirt?” Rowdy crudely clarified. “I didn’t.”

“Oh.”

He helped me clean up the mess we’d made, and then we ate the cold lunch he’d bought in silence. Finishing first, Rowdy stood and gathered his trash. I watched him, biting my tongue whenever I caught myself wanting to ask him to stay.

“You finished?” he asked me when he was done. I glanced at my food and nodded before bawling up my sandwich wrapper and dusting the salt from the fries off my hands. “So let’s go.”

I looked up at him. “What?”

“I got shit to do, and I want you to come with me.”

My mouth opened and closed several times before settling on, “Why?”

Rowdy fingered one of my locs while gazing down at me softly. I’d never seen that look in his eyes before. Lust, yes, but not…this. “I already told you why.”

Because he wanted me to.

Did I want to?

I already knew the answer before I spoke. “Okay.”

As I turned off Temperance and onto Third, with Atlas riding shotgun in my Charger, I tried to remember a time I felt more relaxed than I did at that moment. She looked good at my side, almost like she belonged there.

Even if she did keep throwing me suspicious looks every time I turned down a new street.

“You smoke?” I asked her after she’d glanced my way for the umpteenth time. I thought about giving her some to relax, but I low-key wanted her to keep a clear head today. This was my first time vibing with her without work, sex, or anything else between us.

“No.” Atlas shook her head, drawing my attention to her hair. It looked different. The same but…I don’t know. Newer, I guess. I’d never paid this much attention to a female before to notice shit like that, so I was having trouble articulating what I saw. I knew she’d been getting her hair done at Demi’s lately, so maybe that was it. “I mean…I’ve never tried it.”

I threw her a weird look. “I thought you said you were in college.” College students were the biggest dope fiends around.

“I was only there for one semester,” she spoke to her lap like she was ashamed.

“What made you quit?”

“I didn’t quit.” She inhaled deeply before releasing it slowly. “I just needed a break.”

Since I already knew she wouldn’t answer, I skipped asking her why. “What were you studying?” I asked instead.

“I’m still undecided, but would it be totally cliché if I said I was considering pre-med?”
