Gareth was awfully quiet and Stasio asked, "Are you still with us, Gareth? Well, Ruric? Arman?" He realized he hadn’t heard enough heartbeats nearby.

That was the problem with flying invisibly. They couldn't see each other, though if they were close enough to one another, they could hear their heartbeats.

None of them answered him. He didn't like that at all.

But then they saw the SUV down the road and had to come up with a plan.

"I'll plant a tree trunk in the road to stop the SUV that Eleanor’s driving," Caitlin said, planning to stop Eleanor from getting away.

"What happened to the idea of levitating the SUV?" Levka asked.

"I tried. I can't lift it. It's way too heavy. I would need to practice it a lot more."

"But if she ran into a tree, that could kill her," Stasio said.

"It's just an illusion. Even if she slams on her brakes and she can't stop in time, she won't hit anything," Caitlin said.

The SUV suddenly swerved all over the road as if Eleanor had imbibed way too much alcohol and couldn't control the vehicle.

"I'm not doing it." Caitlin started to do an incantation and the SUV skidded to a halt.

They dove for the SUV right up ahead and that's when they saw Gareth, Arman, and Ruric pulling open the driver’s door and yanking Eleanor out of the SUV. So they’d come up with their own plan without telling them. But it had worked! They hurried to remove her sword and dagger.

Caitlin immediately put her to sleep. “I want to make sure she couldn’t tell anyone our whereabouts.” With all of Caitlin’s witch’s training, she had gained a lot of knowledge.

Stasio and the others were so proud of her for always practicing her spells—oftentimes on them—but in situations like these, it made all the difference in the world. He wondered what she could learn if they ever got settled down and she could take online witch’s courses.

They loved seeing all the cool things she could do. She was amazing, Stasio thought.

“Great thinking,” Levka said.

Ruric tied Eleanor up in the back of the SUV. Levka was already on his phone to Scotty. “Hey, the subject is free. But we have a new development.” He told him what had happened, and that Eleanor had set them up. “All right. We’ll ask William where it is.” Then he ended the call.

William immediately said, “You want to go to a place where Eleanor won’t have the ability to contact the elders?”

“Yes,” Levka said.

“I’ll drive you there.” William took over the driving and everyone retook their seats in the SUV, though this time a sleeping Eleanor was in the backseat with Stasio and Jasmine. Gareth had moved up to the middle bench seat and Levka was in the front passenger seat again.

Caitlin didn’t need to feed off Eleanor. She had a small, refrigerated pack in the SUV that she consumed.

“What’s the gameplan after this?” Stasio asked.

“We’ll take Eleanor to a safehouse where vampires can’t communicate with her in the room where she’ll be confined. Scotty said he was coming to interview her and learn what all she told the elders,” Levka said.

“What about the fight with the elders and their cohorts?” Ruric asked.

“The fight is on Scotty said. I’m sure he’ll give us more details when we see him.”

They finally arrived at a pizza parlor and parked around back to everyone’s surprise. “One of our people owns it, but it’s in a human’s name, so the elders don’t know about it,” William said.

Levka handed Eleanor’s sword and dagger to William since his captors had taken his.

Stasio carried Eleanor out of the SUV after everyone else had exited from it.

“What about Eleanor?” Jasmine asked.
