Is that why we are attracted to each other? Because we are damaged? Because life has been hard on us?

Because it tried to make us warriors, at the risk of making us lose the fight?

29. Seduce Me

Iris

I dip my hand into the popcorn bowl as I stare at the screen of my TV.

“But don’t go downstairs alone, you idiot,” I mutter.

The little blonde behind the screen doesn’t hear me, separates from the group of survivors and takes another path, which leads her directly into a half-lit basement. But what an idiot! Never split up! Why do they always do that in horror movies? They have to learn the rules.

“Is anyone there?” the little blonde asks as she walks down the wooden steps.

“Because you think that if this person is there, he’ll tell you?” I yell from my sofa. “Hi, yes I’m here and I plan to cut you into little pieces.”

I take another handful of popcorn and let myself lean against the backrest. I roll my eyes when a guy comes up behind her and stabs her. There it is, what did I say…

Ring. Ring.

I swallow my saliva with difficulty while wiping my fingers on my pajama bottoms. I stand up, eyebrows furrowed, and glance at the clock above the fridge. 10:16. My front doorbell rings again. Who the hell is that?

Maybe Tucker?

But I don’t think so. We’ve been kind of avoiding each other all week, playing cat and mouse. So I’d be surprised if he suddenly showed up tonight simpering. The truth is, I feel like our so-called relationship is taking a turn that we can’t quite control, after the few revelations that have been made. And that scares me.

“I’m coming!” I exclaim at the next round of knocks on my door.

I look through the peephole before opening it.

“Yeleen? What are you doing here?”

She smiles at me with a knowing look. Instead of answering me, she pushes me slightly to enter my apartment.

“Please, make yourself at home,” I continue in a gentle voice.

“Oh, that’s nice, thank you!”

She stops in the middle of the living room, casually tossing her bag on the bar. “Why does it look like you’re getting ready for bed?” she asks, pouting, her eyes fixed on my pajamas.

“Well, maybe because I am?” I suggest.

Which doesn’t seem to be her case. The pretty little red close-fitting dress she’s wearing matches perfectly with the pair of pumps on her feet. Oh, oh, that’s not a good sign.

“Not anymore,” she exclaims with a big smile. “I’m taking you with me. To the Bomley estate, dear.”

I let out a small laugh before realizing that she is serious. “I don’t think so. I’m off tonight, and it’s not so I can end up in the middle of a debauchery at Tucker’s, you understand?”

She makes a little pout that’s meant to be adorable but doesn’t work on me at all. “Don’t you want to clear your head, ease off the pressure after this week of classes, with a glass of beer in your hand?”

“Um…Yeleen, I think you should avoid talking about alcohol, if you know what I mean.”

I walk over to my couch and sit on the armrest. A guilty look appears on her face. She bites her lower lip as she tries to figure out what to say.

She and I both know what I’m talking about, which is that she gave Rafael’s name to Tucker half-drunk while he was trying to get her into his damn car.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers, before saying more loudly. “You’re so secretive, so closed off to others. You finally decided to open up to me the other day, and like a fool, I ruined it. But I swear Tucker didn’t even pay attention to what I said, otherwise he would have asked me questions, and he didn’t.”
