A nervous twitch comes to him. He blinks strangely, as if he didn’t like my tone.

“We can be on familiar terms, you know. After all, this is the second time we’ve met.”

And I wish I’d never seen you again, asshole.

“So, what is your—”

“Do I look like I want to make friends?” I cut him off coldly.

I resume my task, no longer caring about him. I hardly know Tucker, yet my brain has heeded his warning. I become suspicious of the guy waiting right next door, as if I really should be warry of him. I replay Tucker’s words to myself while glancing at Matt. What happened between them?

“I’ll have a Busch,” he finally says in a less than pleasant voice.

I nod and pour his beer as he hands me a twenty.

“You can keep the change,” he says with a small smile.

Does he think he can get any power or right over me that way? No, thank you! I need the money, but I’m certainly not going to take his tip. I make a return trip to the register, collect the change and slam it next to his hand.

“High Peaks Bar wishes you a pleasant evening,” I say coldly.

“Maybe you can make it better,” he says in my direction.

“I’m not open for business, not at all. So let’s calm down and you can pack up your stupid and heavy flirting. I made it clear the other day. Do you understand?”

I walk away without waiting for his answer. I don’t like this guy, there’s something strange about him.

I approach my colleague who has just arrived. “I’m done,” I tell him as I head to the back of the bar, eager to get changed and go home.

This day has been way too long. As I walk out into the night and get to my car, I see Matt approaching from my left. I ignore him but the bastard is blocking my way.

“Move,” I order him.

“So we’re on familiar terms?” he laughs, refusing to let me pass.

I take a deep breath, trying to calm down…and not to panic. This glint in his eye reminds me of someone else, and I hate it.

“You don’t act very nice,” he continues, staring at my legs, “but you’re hot.”

Without me expecting it, he grabs my arm.

“Say that again and I swear I’ll make you eat your balls,” I reply, pulling my arm away from his.

“Calm down, redhead.”

That nickname makes me cringe. Why do I hate it when he says it, but I’m okay with it when it comes from Tucker?

“Get out of my way,” I order again.

Just as he is about to get a little closer, a figure appears in the night, just behind him. I don’t recognize him at first, but I am sure I have seen him somewhere. I look at his dark eyes, his shaved head. He’s not huge, but he’s pretty beefy. Staring at the tattoo that runs along his neck, I remember.

He’s that guy who stood next to Tucker at the party. Dan.

As Matt places a hand on my forearm, Dan stands up beside me. He puts his body in the way and roughly grabs the blond’s shoulder.
