As I am about to answer them negatively, my phone rings. The name of my aunt appears.

Shit!

I get up in a hurry. “I have to go, bye!” I don’t wait for their answer and hurriedly pick up the phone, leaving the cafeteria. “Hello?” I ask, catching my breath.

At the same time, a lightning bolt strikes near the campus. Wait…don’t tell me I left the convertible hood open on my car, right? Don’t tell me it’s going to rain just to make my day completely suck?

“Agnes just got out of the hospital,” my aunt tells me.

“What?” I shout in the middle of the hallway, just before putting my hand over my mouth. “What do you mean? What happened? Is it bad? I’m going to get on a plane, I can—”

“No, everything is fine, but Agnes had a hysterical fit. I didn’t know what to do.”

A thunderclap sounds. I have no choice but to turn around and head for the parking lot.

“So you took her to the hospital?”

“What did you want me to do?” she asks me in a stern tone.

“Calm her down! Put her in a quiet place. Sit with her, talk to her. Make her understand that she is not a prisoner of her past but free of her present. For God’s sake, she’s just a little girl!”

I hear Emma sigh through the phone. I pick up the pace, now furious.

“I didn’t know what to do,” my aunt finally whispers.

I take a deep breath. I know it’s hard for her, having a kid on her hands for a while. I know it is. “Look, I…next time, call me and put her on, okay? I’ll talk to her as soon as I can.”

“All right,” she says. “I’ll ask her to call you tonight.”

She hangs up without waiting for my answer. I close my eyes and swallow another swear word. I finally get to the exit door and push it open while stuffing the damn phone in my bag.

It is at this moment that I bump into a male torso.

My cell phone lands on the floor, and I almost fall while the man doesn’t move an inch. A hand is firmly placed on my right hip, stabilizing me.

Still staring at the ground, I bend down to pick up my phone.

“Damn it,” I growl.

But thank God it doesn’t have any scratches!

“Are you okay?” a male voice asks me.

Still crouching, I hold back a grunt as I recognize Tucker’s voice. Seriously? I think the universe is against me today.

“Do I look okay?” I mumble as I put my phone away, securing it for good.

I straighten up, and he gently squints his peculiar eyes, which look slightly wet. A smell of soap wafts from his body as he crosses his arms, and my gaze strays to his biceps under his jacket.

Stop! I have no desire to have my stupid mind disturbed at this moment. Enough of the bullshit.

Still pissed off, I walk to my car. All right, it’s not raining yet, that’s lucky.

“I’m fine too,” he taunts me. “You should watch your step next time, redhead.”

I turn around, furious. This is absolutely not the time to mess with me, handsome.

“You’re the one who bumped into me,” I spit out. “And my hair,” I breathe as I approach him, “screws you deeply.”
