I approach him, ignoring the pounding of my heart as it speeds up against my will due to the adrenaline. I’m smaller than him, but I’m not tiny. I stare into his eyes as he tilts his head slightly. His breath comes down on my lips.

“I am not a lamb. You’re not going to eat me.”

“Fighting lambs are the tastiest,” he finishes.

“I don’t want to be part of your game.”

“Oh, but you just got in.”

I can’t read him. Usually it’s pretty easy for me. People reveal their desires and intentions like an open book. But not him.

I have no idea what he’s talking about or what his goal is, but if something stupid is going to happen, I’d rather control the situation. I don’t think and retort, “Then let me set my rules.”

He shakes his head slightly, and his Adam’s apple moves slowly. “Rules are meant to be broken. No rules.”

“So…what’s the point of the game?”

Tucker doesn’t answer me. Am I some kind of…challenge? Does he just want to ruin my life?

I see TJ approaching, a delighted expression on his face. Damn, that’s all I needed. I turn around and start walking away, feeling Tucker’s gaze on the back of my neck.

“You lost,” he says in a loud voice. “Come next week.”

Still with my back to him, I raise my middle finger in his direction and continue to walk away.

6. Let’s Collide With Each Other

Iris

“Hey, Mrs. Psychologist!” someone shouts behind my back.

I stop abruptly in the middle of the cafeteria. Several students look around, just as confused as I am. I turn to the female voice, wondering if it’s really me they’re calling, and my eyes fall on beautiful dark hair. Yeleen. She waves her hand in my direction, and even from where I’m standing, I can see her dark eyes shining with joy. The other girl sitting at her table turns to me, looking inquisitive, as I walk toward them.

“No penis drawn in white on your forehead today?” I tease her theatrically.

She squints her eyes and sends me a fry, mocking the others’ gaze. I must admit I like her attitude.

“Sit down with us,” Yeleen suggests.

I notice a few envious looks on people’s faces. Strange…

I look outside, then at my poor sandwich, then at her table. Without thinking, I accept her offer with a shrug. Lunch with them doesn’t seem so bad.

“I’m Sarah,” says the pretty brunette sitting next to Yeleen as I take a seat opposite her.

“Iris.”

Her blue eyes contrast with her tanned skin, and, to my amazement, she holds out her hand. My gaze wanders to the Rolex hanging on her wrist.

Yeleen crunches another French fry and then rolls her eyes.

“Stop acting so formal,” she laughs, staring at Sarah, “you look like one of those cheerleading bitches.”

A laugh comes out of my mouth as the brunette shoots her an offended look. “Do I look like I want to wiggle my ass around a field pretending to be happy?” She looks to me then, amused. “Forgive me, I was just trying to look civilized.”

“So,” Yeleen continues, turning to me, “what were you doing all alone like a lost soul?”

I glance down at my sandwich. “I’m not alone, and I’m not lost; I just came to fill my belly before hunger drove me to steal a snack from one of the little students.”
