She nods, a small smile on her face.

“I promised you I would. I didn’t touch the alcohol.” She cries again, wrapping her arms around her legs. “I resisted because I promised you,” she continues. “I promised you that. I threw the bottle on the floor. But you weren’t there. Not here…I thought you were gone.”

I squeeze her shoulder as her head drops against my arm. “I’m here. I’m here.”

[I’m in the chapel with Dan.

Get your ass out here

before it gets ugly]

A few minutes after receiving TJ’s text, I walk down the stone steps of the chapel. I find Dan sitting on an old couch, a joint stuck to the corner of his lips, staring at the ceiling. He doesn’t move, immersed in his thoughts. He runs a hand over his shaved head and inhales once more. I move towards him and, without a word, he hands me his joint.

I don’t have time to bring it to my lips before TJ gets up from the other couch. His blond hair is matted and his mouth pinched.

“My father has withdrawn his complaint.”

I drop into the chair next to Dan, and we exchange a look that only we can understand.

“You already texted me to tell me,” I point out to my cousin.

“He wanted to destroy me, and all of a sudden he withdrew the charge. So, are you going to tell me what happened, or are you still acting like assholes?”

Dan lets out a little laugh but neither he nor I respond.

“Shit, guys,” TJ says angrily. “He’s thinking of taking a vacation to ‘relieve the pressure of his job.’ What happened?!”

“We’re protecting our family,” I just say. “We made it clear to him…by visiting him and his whore.”

TJ stares at us, his mouth wide open. He drops back down on the couch in front of us, then raises his head.

“You guys are completely reckless.”

“You’re welcome, you little prick,” Dan mumbles with a smile.

A silence fills the room.

“I tried to come by last night, but you weren’t home,” TJ continues, staring at me strangely.

My muscles tense up at once. I straighten up, elbows on my knees, and cross my hands after throwing the half-smoked joint on the floor.

“I was with Iris.”

“Wait,” exclaims TJ. “You spent the night at her place? I thought there was nothing going on between you two.”

I look him straight in the eye but don’t answer anything.

“You slept together, didn’t you? Shit, you’ve been staring at her for weeks, eating her up. I know you don’t want to share the juicy details, but I’ll have you know that when you were fucking other chicks, you told us everything.”

New silence. I have no desire to talk about Iris with them. What happened between us is none of their business. I don’t want to talk about her body, her problems.

She is mine.

“We’re hanging out,” I say nonetheless.

They’re going to see us together, and I don’t want them asking her a lot of questions. Fuck buddies, nothing else, my ass.
