He may think he’s shocking me with his confession, but I part my lips and bite down hard on his fingertip before wrapping my tongue around his flesh. “Watch out, I’ll bite.”

He brings his thumb against his mouth and caresses it with his tongue, licking without any modesty the saliva I just put on it.

“That’s really disgusting,” exclaims Agnes, almost choking, a few feet away.

Feels like a cold shower. My eyes go wide as I push Tucker away abruptly, but he doesn’t seem to be bothered at all. He slowly walks away from me, winking at my sister. “Next time, close your eyes.”

Agnes walks into the living room, a pink vest in her hands, looking for the remote control. I glare at Tucker.

“Don’t worry, I’ve seen Iris do worse,” my little sister retorts. “When she was with Rafael, well, sometimes there were weird noises, and I was never allowed in her room.”

My heart misses a beat. Agnes collapses on the couch and starts a cartoon, not realizing the bomb she has just dropped. I glance over at Tucker and discover that he is staring at me. This is the second time he’s heard about Rafael, and now he’s completely shut down. His gaze is no longer burning but has a different glow. Is it…shit, is it jealousy? I’m sure he’s already imagining a lot of things between me and this Rafael he knows nothing about.

He moves away a few steps, arms along his body, while I try to regain my composure.

“An ex?” he almost spits.

I don’t like the way he says that. As if he meant a piece of shit. “Yeah,” I answer shortly.

“I see,” Tucker continues with the same displeased expression on his face.

From the look on his face and the dryness of his tone, I don’t feel like telling him anything more. He has no idea who Rafael was or what he meant to me. Nor does he know that he died, bleeding out while I was helpless next to him. Tucker takes a deep breath, understanding that I’m uncomfortable with this conversation, and seems to calm down.

“I’m sorry…I guess I get a little crazy when it comes to you.”

How can he be so annoying and so attractive in the same minute? His confession calms me down inside. I know for a fact that a new feeling is developing in him, that this is why he’s lost. I can see it in his eyes, damn it, and I’m pretty sure I’m giving him the same expression back.

“It’s nothing,” I whisper.

“No, it’s something,” he says gravely, in a low voice so that Agnes doesn’t hear our little discussion. “You just shut down on me, and I don’t like that. Last night, you confided in me, you trusted me, and I don’t want us to become distant from each other again this morning. I won’t allow that for us.”

He swallows, his Adam’s apple moving gently down his throat. His eyes are tired, and I wonder how long he’s been awake, watching me sleep. He looks haunted and worried. So I approach him, unable to get angry, and press my mouth against his with a loud smack. “I think I already knew that…that you were a little crazy.”

My voice is more relaxed, and his shoulders relax in turn.

“Oh yeah?” he asks, raising his eyebrows.

“Who calls himself a ‘pack leader,’ really?” I say mockingly.

He lets out a small laugh as his cell phone rings in his back pocket. He picks it up with a frown.

“My mom…um…I have to go.”

“Is everything okay?”

He nods but now seems to be deep in thought. I watch him for the next minute as he collects his things. His jaw is clenched and his gaze locked. I doubt asking him anything else now would get me anywhere. If there’s anyone on this earth more secretive than me, it’s Tucker Bomley. When he has collected his bag, he walks towards me, uncertain.

“Thanks for staying the night,” I finally say.

He frowns a little more, his shoulders tense. “You don’t have to thank me, Iris. I was serious; nothing will happen to you.”

I find it hard to believe his words, but I want to hold on to them.

“Tonight I’ll—”

“It’s okay,” I cut him off. “I don’t want you to be my chaperone.”

“I don’t mind. Some asshole broke into your house to write that shit on this wall.”
