Of course, I’m going to do it. With the strength of my arms, I pull myself up onto the counter. Buck watches me from a distance, with a questioning look on his face. I wink at him and stand on the bar.

Let’s get this show on the road.

***

Tucker

My car runs along the narrow tree-lined driveway. I park in front of the huge modern house and leave the engine running. The passenger door opens immediately and slams shut. I stare at my cousin, who sits down and drops his head on the headrest.

“Are you okay?” I ask him.

TJ opens his mouth, angrily wipes away the tear that runs down his cheek, and finally lets out a joyless laugh.

“I hate him. I fucking hate him so deeply it’s embedded in my skin.”

I don’t say anything, simply driving back to the road. I leave the property while letting my cousin relax beside me. I hate seeing him like this, and knowing that his father is the one putting him in such a state pisses me off even more. My dad was a great man, damn it. He supported me in every choice I made before he died. That’s not the case with the scumbag that is TJ’s father.

“My mom wouldn’t tell me, but I saw the bruises on her arms, Tucker. Damn, he hit her again, and she shuts her mouth. I’m going to beat the shit out of him, I swear, I want to so bad.”

“I know, man,” I say through my clenched teeth.

This isn’t the first time his father has laid a hand on my aunt, my father’s sister. TJ has come to blows with him before for this reason. But then his mother always sides with her husband, preferring to save appearances rather than her own skin.

I hear TJ sniffle quietly and glance at him while clutching my steering wheel in my hands.

“Stop holding back, damn it,” I mutter. “You’ve seen me messed up enough times. We’ve got each other’s backs.”

He mumbles a curse, lets it go for a minute, then leans over and pokes me in the shoulder.

“Thank you, pretty girl,” he says.

I laugh, delighted to find him back. He’s the best definition of a good mood, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. “So, where do you want to go? Delta is having a party on campus tonight.”

He shakes his head. “I told Dan to meet us at High Peaks Bar. He’s already on his way.”

I don’t answer, swallowing hard. Iris will be there, I’m sure. That means I’ll have to see her again. How will she react? Insult me because I snuck out like a jerk? Or laugh with me because she’s moved on?

I don’t know why I’ve had this fucking knot in my stomach since I left her apartment. I usually do that, leave just before dawn. But I knew I had a problem when I woke up in the middle of the night and was holding her close.

Fuck, my nose was buried in her hair.

And I liked it.

It’s never happened to me before. So I got scared and ran away, scribbling a little note before I left, as if I couldn’t quite get away like a thief.

We both got what we wanted, finally releasing the tension that had been building up inside us the past few weeks. It’s cool. Now we can…stop thinking about it and move on to the next problem. I’m laughing inwardly because all I can think about is her little pussy since I left her arms. We’re moving on to the next problem…

In my defense, I didn’t expect to enjoy this night so much. She’s as much of a tigress in bed as she is out, so yeah, it was more than good.

But now that I’ve had her, I need to get her out of my head, move on to another girl.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m going to do. And maybe she’ll do the same. A thought I don’t like at all.

“Are you okay?” TJ asks me, quietly observing me.

That’s when I notice that I’m gripping the steering wheel like crazy. I loosen my grip and try to relax my muscles. “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.” I pull into the parking lot and notice that the place is completely packed. I’m in no mood to meet a lot of familiar faces. I park and turn off the car.

“Try not to piss off Iris, tonight, I really like her,” says TJ while taking off his sweater.
