“Agreed,” JK sighed. “Show me the difference again.”

The utensils lesson ended up with them doing a mini duel with their forks as swords, which drew scandalized looks from some of the staff, but Tabitha didn’t care. She and JK were having fun, and that was all that really mattered.

“It’s time for your pills.”

“Oh yes! Really, I don’t know what I would do without you.” Tabitha pulled JK in for a brief kiss before taking the box JK handed her and downing a few pills. She was on a fertility treatment, getting ready for artificial insemination. They had already picked out the perfect sperm donor- a top diplomat and good friend of Tabitha’s mother’s son who Tabitha had always liked- although all of this was very top secret from public knowledge- and would be going in for the procedure in less than a month.

Though they had only been married for six months now, they were both more than ready to start a family. Mary was delighted that she would hopefully soon have a grandchild.

As Tabitha had expected, once the initial awkwardness faded, she and JK had quickly become close, bonded by their love for Tabitha.

“Do you think we’ll get any protesters at the clinic?” Tabitha asked.

“I think if we do, they’ll be out-shouted by our supporters.”

That was true enough. They had always had far more support than they’d had hate. Tabitha remembered her coming out, just under two years ago now.

“I can’t look! J, look for me.”

“Give it here, sweetheart. Don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll be fine.” JK took Tabitha’s phone and glanced at Twitter. Already, tweets were coming in by the dozens.

Just half an hour ago, Tabitha had done the interview of a lifetime, where she not only came out as gay, but also announced her relationship with JK to the rest of the world. They had been planning this for months now, going over speeches and possible questions the interviewer could ask.

In public, JK had been acting as Tabitha’s bodyguard. Both she and Tabitha were more than ready to be able to kiss and hold hands outside of the privacy of their now soundproofed bedroom.

“It’s good, love! I mean, there are a few homophobes, like we expected, but, let’s see—maybe nine out of ten of them are positive. They’re calling you an inspiration to lesbians worldwide. Oh! Look, there are other women coming out in response right now and tagging you. Some of them are as young as twelve and thirteen. Tab, this is wonderful.”

Tabitha felt tears threatening and took a deep breath. “I’m sure the hate will come.”

“It will,” JK agreed. “When it does, though, we will face it head-on. Try to take the win, love. You’ve gained the adoration of many.” She glanced at the phone again. “People are praising your decision to be with someone not of noble birth. They say you’re breaking a cycle that never should have been there to begin with.”

“What about other royalty around the world?”

JK scrolled for a few minutes before responding. “Surprisingly positive. There’s one family here that’s spewing hate, but I count at least three others who are openly supportive. One prince is saying that his best friend is gay and he’s glad that the queer community is getting some representation among royalty.”

It was all too much. The tears spilled over, but they were tears of joy and relief. “I can’t believe it. We actually did it.”

“You did it. I was just there to support.”

“Please. Like I wouldn’t have run for the hills before they could ask the first question if you hadn’t been there giving me a thumbs up behind the camera.”

“I’ll always be there for you, Tab. No matter what.”

Tabitha looked at her list. “We still need to go over the protocol for how to deal with foreign royalty.”

“Yeah? I bet I can convince you to postpone that lesson.” JK pressed a kiss to Tabitha’s earlobe.

“We shouldn’t. It’s our duty.”

“It’s my primary duty to love you. Once you’re pregnant, you never know how you’ll feel. You may be fine, but you may feel gross and not want to have sex at all. We should take advantage of this time while we have it.”

That was a difficult argument to refute. “Well, I suppose it can’t hurt to delay a little…”

JK captured Tabitha’s lips in a kiss. Tabitha kissed her back, ignoring the disapproving sniff from one of the staff members who was passing through the dining room. She wasn’t going to stop kissing her wife in her own home just because some people were stuffy and didn’t approve of public displays of affection.

JK lifted Tabitha up and Tabitha wrapped her legs easily around JK’s waist. JK was well acquainted with the palace gym and regularly worked out, leaving her easily able to heft Tabitha’s weight, something that never failed to turn Tabitha on.

Tabitha ignored the titters as JK carried her through to their bedroom and laid her down on the bed.
