JK poked her head into the kitchen and sure enough, there was a man in a chef’s uniform working at the stove.

“JK, right? Bacon is nearly ready. If you’d like to take a seat, I’ll have it out to you in no time.”

“How did you know when to get the food ready?”

“Tabitha’s chef in the U.K. got hold of me. He let me know what Tabitha’s patterns and preferences are so that I can get food ready for her in good time.”

JK was curious as to what secrets Dan knew, but her stomach chose that moment to grumble loudly. She chuckled. “I guess I’ll go join Tabitha for breakfast, then. Thanks, Dan.”

Tabitha was already tucking into a bowl of fruit salad. JK sat down next to her, helping herself to fruit salad as well.

“How did you sleep?”

Tabitha shrugged. “Not the best. First night away from home and all that. You?”

“Perfectly. I’ve had to learn to get what sleep I can, when I can. As long as there is no one shooting at me, I sleep like a baby.”

“That’s a pretty low bar.”

“Over here it is.”

“You must have seen some pretty hectic stuff.”

“Yeah. I didn’t have it as bad as some, though. All in all, I got off fairly easily.”

“What’s the scariest thing that happened to you over there?”

It wasn’t a pleasant thought, but JK reminded herself that Tabitha was just innocently curious and not trying to stir up bad memories. “I suppose the scariest was when a member of my unit was taken captive. We managed to get him back, mostly unharmed, but those three days were the longest of my life.”

“You must have really cared about him.”

“I did. My unit was like my family over there. I’d have done anything for them.”

“You care. I like that about you. I likeyou, JK.”

JK caught Tabitha’s big green eyes looking fixing her own. She was beautifully natural this morning. No contact lenses, her own eyes were enchanting. Her brown bob was messier than yesterday and her legs were long and tan in little PJ shorts and a cropped top.

Fuck, she is so beautiful.

“Thank you. I like you as well, Tabitha.” Tabitha was sweet and naïve and very sheltered, but JK didn’t hold that against her. She’d led a very sheltered life. JK was doing her best not to blush, but she feared she was failing miserably.

What was it about Tabitha that made her feel like a schoolgirl all over again?

Tabitha let her hand slide under the table to rest on JK’s thigh. JK stiffened. Was Tabitha trying to kill her? Make her expire where she sat from sheer unrealized desire? Because if she was, she was doing a pretty good job at it.

“Tabitha, that’s not a good idea.”

Tabitha was nearly twenty years younger than her. Aside from who she was, JK definitely didn’t date women in their 20s.

“Why not?” Tabitha asked innocently, her green eyes sparkling as she slid her hand further up JK’s thigh. JK gently took her hand and removed it, placing it firmly on the table.

“We’re from completely different worlds. I’msomuch older than you. It would never work between us.”

“Who says it needs to work long-term? We have a few weeks. You’re practically going to be glued to my side. We may as well enjoy ourselves.”

“I don’t want that.”

“Are you sure?” Tabitha purred, leaning in close to speak in JK’s ear, her soft breath sending shivers down JK’s spine. She smelled like bergamot and something citrus. JK breathed in her scent for a second.
