I stomp on his mangled knee, and he screams like a boy calling for his mother.
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
I point my gun at his other knee.
He turns hysterical. “No, man! I don’t know where she is. Aidan was going to take her to Mexico, but the police are waiting at the border. He just said he was going to take her on a long adventure. I swear, I don’t know anything else!”
I cock my gun.
“I swear, man!”
I think he’s telling the truth. Aidan is not stupid enough to tell anyone his plans, especially this fool. I hit him in the head, tear his shirt, and use it to gag him and tie his hands and ankles.
I run to Paola.
“Rob!” She’s all tied up, although it looks like she managed to free herself from her gag.
“Are you okay, Paola?”
“I’m fine.”
“Did you see her?”
“No. This house was empty when I got here.”
Fuck.
I pick up my phone.
“Please, Rob, don’t involve the police. Aidan will hurt her.”
“Did you hear anything? Did this guy and Aidan discuss anything? Anything at all?”
“I don’t know. But Aidan called that man not long ago.” She nods at Fernando. “I think thatstronzomade a last-minute change.”
It’s possible that Aidan intended to drive to Mexico and then sail from San Felipe, through the Gulf of California. The sail would be easier than over the Pacific Ocean. That was why he’d set up base in Pine Valley!
But now, with Mexico out of the question for him, he’ll likely sail from San Diego.
I call my brother. “Clay, I’m with Amber-Rose’s mom, but I can’t find her. They must’ve gone in another car.”
“I’ll get Blake to find it.”
“Where’s Dave? Get him to fetch Paola here in Pine Valley.”
“Sure. Have you seen Fernando?”
I look at the man lying unconscious. “He’s tame now.” Then I hang up and turn to Paola. “Paola…”
“Please, call me Mama.”
“Well, Mama, someone is coming to get you out of here.” I show him the photo of Dave. “You’ll be safe. He’s our man.”
“Please don’t call the police. I can’t let Aidan destroy my daughter again.”
I look at her.
