Medici turns back to me. Embers dance in his dark eyes. "We’ll make a pit stop in New York to hit up a franchise and also so you can grab your passport."

"I thought we needed food a jet could deliver."

"Popeyes is worth an impromptu landing."

"Where are we currently?"

"Kansas."

My eyebrows furrow. Kansas?

What in God’s name am I doing there?

My kidnappers took me somewhere over the rainbow, bitch.

I take another sip of my coffee. "Step on the gas."

ChapterFour

Medici

"This isn’t bad." I recline in the booth as I take a bite of my chicken sandwich.

Mattie crooks a brow. "When you’ve been starving for the past however many hours, it’s a little better thannot bad."

"Well, I wasn’t kidnapped," I snap. "I ate breakfast."

Mattie glares at me. "This is the best damn chicken-and-pickle sandwich I’ve ever had in my life.Agree with me."

I take a sip of my lemon soda and try not to snort.

Mattie is…adorable. Angelic. One-of-a-kind.

There’s no denying it.

He dons the spare Little clothes I had lying in the back of my helicopter—that I was originally going to bring to my prison boy, Trevion.

His floppy hair is strewn about in every direction because of the wind.

A pink flush pervades his smooth cheeks, one that’s as rosy as it is sweet.

Yet—there’s somethingelseabout Mattie that drives me crazy.

It’s not merely his body, face, or the way he looks in the rainbow and teddy clothes.

It’s his attitude—Mattie has so much goddamn spunk.

How wouldIhave reacted if two monstrous creeps kidnapped me?

Iwouldn’t be so fucking chipper, full of life, ready to dust myself off and get back on the proverbial horse of life.

Mattie is different. Unique.

His gung-ho personality sets him apart from other boys.

"Fine." The word charges out of me. "The sandwich is better thannot bad."

"That’s what I thought." Mattie sticks his nose in the air. "Now, I hope you don't think I’m a dictator when it comes to food, but I like the people I eat with to praise my meals—it makes them taste better."
