I think that was something that I’d found slightly intimidating about him. I’d always heard about how attractive women found it difficult to find partners because men were often intimidated by their beauty. I realized the same could be said about men who were good looking, too.

Because Leo’s facial features made him impossibly attractive to me, but his body being so lean, fit, and muscular was just one more thing to swoon over. Plus, there was no question that he had to put in at least some effort to maintain his physique, and I thought that said something about the kind of man he was.

Leo moved in my direction, looked down at the spread in front of the couch, and asked, “When are the others getting here?”

“Others?” I repeated.

He jerked his head toward the snacks I had out and said, “Those can’t be just for us. I assume your other guests are joining us.”

I shook my head. “Nope. It’s just us. The two couples I have staying here right now all left just a little while ago, dressed up for what I could only assume is going to be dinner and something else fun in town.”

Leo’s eyes narrowed in a way that indicated he was attempting to figure something out.

Unable to stand the suspense, I asked, “What is it?”

He shifted his attention between me and the table with the goodies several times before his focus finally settled on me. Cocking an eyebrow questioningly, he wondered, “Why is there so much junk food?”

My body tensed as I reasoned, “Oh, um, well, I didn’t know what you’d like, so I figured it was best to have a variety.”

A sympathetic look washed over his face, his head tipping to one side. His lips moved in such a way that I could tell he was struggling with something. Either he wanted to stop himself from bursting into a fit of giggles, which I thought would have been rather strange, considering the circumstances, or there was something he was holding himself back from saying.

“Oh, God. Are you allergic?” I asked.

“What? No.”

“I don’t understand what the look on your face is about, then,” I told him.

The corners of his mouth twitched just before he revealed, “I don’t know how to tell you this, but I’m not one who’s big on junk food.”

All of the warmth and happiness I’d been feeling seemed to have evaporated. “What?”

Leo shrugged. “I don’t really eat junk food.”

“But… but you called and asked if I needed you to pick up any snacks,” I stammered.

Nodding, he explained, “Yeah. I thought you might want some popcorn or something like that. I didn’t realize you turned this place into a legitimate movie theater snack stand.”

I bit my lip, feeling embarrassed.

Leo noticed and immediately reached his hand out to the side of my arm at my shoulder. He gave me a squeeze and insisted, “There’s no need to be embarrassed. I think it’s cute.”

Cute?

He thought the fact that I had put out a bunch of snacks he wasn’t going to eat was cute?

“I feel like you’re just trying to make me feel better about the fact that I’ve got a massive sweet tooth,” I remarked.

Leo shook his head. “Nope. I’m being honest.”

“So, you’re not going to have any of this?” I asked, gesturing toward the table.

“I’ll have something,” he assured me. “But it’s not going to put a dent in all that you’ve got here.”

I dropped my gaze to the ground and shifted uncomfortably on my feet. Leo’s hand instantly left my shoulder, and he gently pinched my chin between his thumb and forefinger. When he had my attention on him again, he asked, “Why does it seem like you’re upset?”

It was difficult to think with his fingers on me, even if they were only touching my chin. It was even more challenging to try to come up with a response to what he had asked. So, as best I could, I allowed my eyes to drop to his torso. They roamed over his chest, shoulders, and arms before returning to his face. I should have known with just a single look at him that he wasn’t a guy who consumed sugar in unhealthy doses. Finally, I said, “Look at you.”

“Yeah? And look at you,” he urged.
