“Maybe a little,” I said softly.

He pressed a chaste kiss to my lips and suggested, “Let’s get cleaned up. I’ll make breakfast this morning, and then we’ll head into Harper Security for some weapons training this morning. I’ve got a class later this morning, but afterward, we’ll go do something fun together.”

I had editing work to do, but I wasn’t going to give up the opportunity to do something fun with Kane. So, I’d go in and do some weapons training with him this morning, and while he taught his class, I’d work in one of the offices or the conference room.

“That works for me.”

With that, Kane and I exited the bed and went about getting ourselves cleaned up. While I got myself dressed and ready to leave, he made breakfast. It was just another thing in a long list that had me unable to ignore how much he was beginning to mean to me, and how desperately I wanted to hold on to him.

Roughly an hour later, we were on our way to Harper Security. We were nearly there when I asked, “So, what is the actual plan for later today?”

“I’m not entirely sure yet,” he answered. “I had a few ideas, but I couldn’t manage to settle on one.”

“How about you tell me what my options are, and I’ll help you decide?” I offered.

“Well, I was thinking about—” That was all he got out before his phone started ringing. “Hang on one second,” he said as he moved to answer the call. “Leo?”

At the mere mention of Leo’s name, I felt my body grow solid. Leo had been working on the case, and from what I’d been told, he was still working to make sure there would be no chance of any of this coming back to me when he handed over everything he had to the proper authorities.

While I knew it was entirely possible he was calling Kane for something completely unrelated to Patrick or me, I couldn’t help feeling the worst.

It seemed my worries were not unfounded, because Kane glanced over at me and said into the phone, “Yeah, she’s with me. We’re on our way in now. We’ll be there in less than two minutes.”

There was a moment of silence as Leo replied.

“We didn’t see anything. What’s going on?” Kane pressed.

More silence.

Then, he said, “I’d like to know what I’m walking into.”

This was not good.

This was very, very bad.

My belly was instantly a bundle of nerves and anxiety and stress. It was clear, based on Kane’s responses that Leo must have asked specifically about me.

Why would he do that unless he thought I might not be with Kane?

My eyes widened as it hit me.

Maybe Leo had reason to believe that I might not have been with Kane because he thought that Patrick had located me.

Oh, God.

No.

I didn’t want to leave.

Not because I didn’t want to leave again, but because I didn’t want to leave Kane.

I found him and happiness and so much I hadn’t ever anticipated finding here.

A second later, Kane disconnected the call.

“What’s going on?” I immediately asked.

“Let’s wait until we get inside,” Kane urged, as we pulled into the parking lot.
