Page 168 of Possessing Eden

“You know,” I say, turning to face Simon. “One time, you were dead set against children and family, if I remember correctly.”

“Things changed quite rapidly,” Simon says, still typing away. “What did you say the woman’s name was?”

“Sonya. She was Eden’s neighbor before Eden came to live with me,” I answer. “Why do you ask?”

“If she was a neighbor of Eden’s and she considered her trustworthy enough to watch her child then she bears looking into. Also, Sonya and Alex? Quite the Russian names at a time when we’re at war with the Russians,” Simon says.

He’s right, and while I did originally pause at her name, meeting her didn’t set off any alarms in the back of my head.

Shrugging my shoulders, I look back to Lucifer. “Perhaps you could order Thaddeus to be my bodyguard next Friday night? Eden and I really could use a night of fine dining with our friend.”

“Why, Jude,” Lucifer says with a grin, “that’s quite underhanded of you.”

“I don’t blind date,” Thad grunts again.

Sitting back in my seat, I just give a nod of my head towards Thaddeus. “Duly noted, my brother.”

Finally pulling up in front of the warehouse, I check the surroundings. All of us are accounted for that are supposed to be here. That’s a good thing, but something is still off.

It’s like looking up into the skies to see them dark and stormy yet no rain is falling.

“One moment,” Simon says and leans up between us. His laptop open, he sets it down between Thaddeus and me.

There, in living color, is quite the photo of a beautiful black-haired woman. Her deep blue eyes are very alluring. Her smile, though, that is what really draws you to her. It’s full of warmth and kindness.

Sonya.

Simon just played the ultimate checkmate to poor Thaddeus.

“What?” Thad asks Simon then looks at me to clarify.

Playing the part, I look back to Simon. “Who is that, my dear brother?”

“Sonya,” Simon says, and I hear a loud laugh as Lucifer gets out of the SUV.

When Simon pulls the laptop back to him, Thaddeus reaches for it, trying to keep it for a moment longer.

“Time to work,” I say and hop out of the car with Simon.

Poor Thaddeus sits in the car for far longer than I thought he would. Just staring at me with pure madness, but his gaze also darts to Simon’s laptop.

I wonder if after we’re done with our work here…

Will we have a new wife in the family?

Shrugging my shoulders at him, I head towards the door of the warehouse and smile to myself. Despite the feeling of a tremendous storm brewing, at least I did my good deed for the day.

“That was quite dastardly,” Lucifer says behind me.

“Misery loves company,” I say with a small smile.

Opening the door for Lucifer and Simon, I look back to Thaddeus and his glowering face as he catches up to us.

When it’s just the two of us standing in the doorway, he says, “Set up the date.”

He punches me hard in the shoulder then moves past me, heading into the building.

Grinning, I think I’ll have Eden set it up. It’ll help her feel more normal after all of the stress from these last couple of weeks.
