Page 108 of Possessing Eden

But that’s not likely, considering I’m normally the one he would use to do such a job if it needed doing.

Pulling Abel into his arms, Lucifer smiles at Eden. His voice warm as he says, “Welcome to my office, Eden.”

Looking from me to Lucifer, Eden stutters briefly, “T-Thank you.”

The almost palpable tension in the atmosphere lifts instantly.

Nathaniel walks into the room last.

When he spots Abel in Lucifer’s arms, he grins. “Ah, there’s my little guy.”

Stopping to smile at Eden and me, Nathaniel asks, “How’s his temperature and mood today?”

“Good,” Eden answers, but with her throat still raw it comes out hoarsely. “Thank you.”

Her voice sends the smallest of shivers down my spine. I don’t know what it is, but whenever I hear it, it makes my skin tingle with delight.

“Excellent. ” Nathaniel smiles then walks over to Lucifer, lightly lifting Abel from his arms. “I’m going to take the little guy over for a quick check.”

Eden’s face tightens with worry but Nathaniel gives her a reassuring smile. “We’ll be back in a few minutes. I just want to check his infection. After today’s meeting, I’d like to do a full checkup on him before you leave, if that’s okay.”

I want to smirk at Nathaniel’s words, but I refrain from doing so. Lucifer will truly have the final say on whether Eden and I live, but the Doc doesn’t give a shit.

I give the smirk to Simon instead and gently move Eden to two open chairs.

“Everyone,” I say and turn to the room. “This is my wife, Eden, and our son, Abel. I believe we have a lot to talk about.”

Sitting us down, I lean back in my chair and rub my back against the thick leather material. I’ve had an itch there since I came into the office and feel relief when I look at Simon.

His face is so disgusted and annoyed with me, I think he’s about to burst into flames.

“Eden, you’ve had quite an interesting couple of days, it seems,” Lucifer says with a small frown.

Eden roughly clears her throat then looks at me. “Is it possible to get water?”

“Of course, my angel,” I murmur to her then look at the room. “Before we continue, I need to get her water.”

“I’ve got it,” Thaddeus says from near the door before he quietly slips out of the office.

“While we wait,” Simon says, “the men who attacked you this morning were all Russian Bratva. At least that’s what my preliminary searches have turned up.”

Eden tenses up beside me, and I’m quite sure everyone in the office sees it as well. It’s not new information, though. I know she’s the reason they came for me, and she has been punished for her transgression.

“I figured as much.” I nod my head. “It bothers me, though, that they were Bratva yet so poorly trained. They had multiple chances to make things harder for me and yet never took them.”

Thaddeus comes back into the office with three bottles of cold water and sets them on the table next to Eden. Looking from her to me, he raises his eyebrows only once, and I nod back. He’s got questions for me as well, it seems.

Nodding her thanks, Eden grabs one of the bottles of water and takes a long drink from it.

Wasting no time, Simon immediately asks her, “Your uncle sent you to spy on us at the club, why?”

Eden freezes up, her whole body going rigid except for her eyes. Those move rapidly around the room, looking from face to face. As if she’s seeing where she is for the very first time.

And there’s something there beyond the fear and pain. Beyond the scared woman I met those nights ago against the wall in a rancid alley.

It’s fury. A fury that’s deep and cutting to the bone.

Not fury that she’s here. Not fury that she failed in whatever job they had her doing…
