“I don’t know.” I hold the phone to my ear with my shoulder as I grab a pair of black jeans off the hanger. “You’re a nurse. Make something up.”

“Um, no,” she states, and I stop in my tracks. “That is bad luck.”

“Oh my God,” I grumble. “It is not. Just, would you do me a favor and make something up?”

“It’s bad karma,” she states in a huff. “The last time I did this for you, our fish died.”

“It was a beta fish, and he lived for nine years.” My voice goes up. “Good news is, no one has a fish, so you don’t have to worry about anything dying.”

“I don’t know,” she draws out, and I can tell she’s on the fence about this.

“You’re the fucking worst,” I hiss. “Just call me in thirty minutes, and I’ll make up something myself. Do you think you can do that, Mother Teresa?”

I hang up on her as she laughs into the phone. “The next time she asks something, I’m going to be like, I don’t know, is the sky blue?” I walk over and go through my tops until I spot one that I know will make him eat his tongue.

I undress before I slip on the black corset and mesh bodysuit. I snap the button together between my legs and look at myself in the mirror. Two black triangles hide my boobs, but then five stripes go down between the mesh, showing off my abs. I slide on the black jeans that mold to my every single curve. Turning around, I see the bodysuit goes down in the back, showing you that I’m not wearing a bra. I walk over to the rack of shoes, grabbing the highest pair I can find and wincing as soon as I put my feet in them. “It hurts to be beautiful,” I declare as I rush into the bathroom. Taking down my hair, I brush it through before shaking it at the roots with my hands.

I open the drawer and grab my mascara, then apply a couple of coats before picking up my lip liner. I trace my lips before I fill them in and top them with lip gloss. “Why do you wear lip gloss?” I can hear him ask. “It just makes me want to mess up your lips by kissing the shit out of you.”

I toss the gloss into my small black purse along with my phone. On my way out of the closet, I take one last look at myself and smile. “Let’s play, Romeo,” I say before grabbing a black jacket but holding it in my hands.

When I walk out of my room, I look over at the front door and see that he’s not there. “Did he leave?” I ask myself as I make my way down the stairs.

“I did not leave.” I hear him from the other side as he walks out of the kitchen. He takes one look at me, and I know he likes what he sees. His eyes go a dark blue when he’s about to lose control. I’ve seen it enough times to know that look.

“Why are you lurking in my house?” I huff, ignoring the way my body wants to react to him. So what? I’m attracted to him, I try to tell myself. I haven’t had sex in a long time, I argue with myself, making up reasons. “Now I’m going to have to sage it when I get back.”

“You look beautiful,” he compliments, stopping in front of me.

“One, I know.” I turn and walk in front of him, giving him a chance to check out my ass because I know how much he used to love my ass. “And two.” I open the door, looking over my shoulder and seeing that he is, in fact, staring at my ass. His eyes fly up to mine when he sees that I’ve stopped. “Save it for someone else, Romeo.”

I walk out the door and wait for him to follow before I turn back and shut it. Pressing the button on the pin pad, I lock the door. “That isn’t exactly safe,” he informs me, and I look over at him.

“Going out with you isn’t safe either, yet here I am,” I fire back, ignoring that my stomach got some flutters when it sounded like he was worried about me.

“Where are we going?” I ask, and he looks at me.

“It’s a surprise.” He stands next to me. “Shall we?” He puts his hand on my lower back, the heat seeping into my skin.

“I can meet you there.” I point over at my car with my thumb.

“Not a chance in hell.” He guides me toward the Mercedes and opens the passenger door. “After you,” he says, and I get in, but he doesn’t close the door, so I look back over at him. He squats down next to the open door. “In case I don’t tell you later,” he says softly, “I had the best time tonight.”

I look at him shocked. “Did you just quote Julia Roberts?”

He laughs. “You said it’s your favorite movie.” He shrugs, and I can see his eyes fill with lightness. “But it fit the scene.”

“Have you ever seen the scene in Carrie?” I ask. He doesn’t answer me; he just closes the door. I make the mistake of watching him walk away in the side mirror. It’s my turn to watch his ass, and fuck if it hasn’t gotten even better than it was before.

He gets into the car, and I make sure that I put my purse and jacket on my lap, folding my hands together so he doesn’t grab one of them. He starts the car, and it’s the most awkward car ride of my life, and I’ve been in the car after seeing my parents do the nasty. When he pulls up to a white building, all I see is the name of the hotel, and my head whips around to him. “This is where you’re taking me?” I ask as he pulls up for the valet.

“Yes,” he confirms at the same time as my door opens and a man is smiling at me.

“Welcome to Virgin Hotel,” he greets. “Are you staying with us?”

“Absolutely not.” I shake my head and then feel Romeo beside me.

“We have a reservation at the Common Club,” he says to the man who hands him a ticket.
