“Doesn’t matter,” he says with a wave of his hand. “Now that you know the problem, how are you going to fix shit with Thane?”

“I don’t know if I can fix it since he won’t talk to me. Maybe I should’ve gone to Georgia with Bear.”

“Well, I’ve got a feeling that Lyla and Barrett aren’t finished.”

“Great for them, but how does that help me?” I huff.

“Because if Lyla comes back for Bear, Thane will come back with her, right?”

“Oh. Yeah, I guess so.”

“Give it a little more time. I bet Thane’s missing you as much as you miss him.”

“I hope you’re right.”

CHAPTERFORTY-TWO

Thane

“What are your plans this Saturday?” Lyla asks when I pick her up from her new job one afternoon.

“Ah, driving people around, I guess. Weekends are the most lucrative.”

“How would you feel about going back to Virginia? I could drive you up, and you could get your bike.”

“Oh.”

Go back to Clayton? So close to Rockland? To the scene of the crime where my heart was stolen and never recovered.

“I don’t know, Ly.”

“You don’t have to come with me. I just thought you missed your bike…”

“I do miss my bike. But why did you want to go back this Saturday, specifically?”

“Oh, um, Barrett’s having his grand opening for his nonprofit – Bruised Not Broken. It’s sort of a bridge between veterans and motorcycle clubs.”

“You helped him with it, didn’t you?” I ask as I drive us home.

“Yeah. A little bit. Mostly just paperwork. I also sort of came up with the name.”

“So every time Barrett thinks about his organization, says or writes the name, he’ll no doubt be thinking about you too.”

“Do you think so?”

“Absolutely,” I tell her. “You’re not going back to reconcile, are you?”

“What? No! I have a job down here, even if it pays peanuts. We have a condo.”

“That’s only paid up for a few more days this month,” I point out.

“Wait. Are you encouraging me to make up with Bear?”

“Nope. Definitely not. That asshole lied to you.”

“So did my…so did Isaac,” she says quietly, stammering over his name when she almost called him her dad. “Don’t you miss your friends in the MC?”

“Eh.” I shrug while keeping my eyes on the slow-moving traffic.
