What if that’s all I am to him? A good time. He’s never had a relationship last more than a night with any woman. There’s no way he’s going to want to be, what? My boyfriend?

By the time the hot water runs out, my head is even more confused than before. I dry off and hurry into the guest room to change, thinking I probably just need more sleep. Running on two or three hours isn’t enough to think rationally.

I’m planning on doing just that, taking a long nap after I grab some food from the kitchen. I’m not sure how many calories I burned last night, but it felt like a lot.

I’ve just finished my roast beef, turkey, and ham sandwich and am starting in on a full bag of potato chips when the bedroom door flies open, nearly making me choke.

It’s not RJ but Lyla, and the girl looks furious.

“You’re gonna get crumbs in the sheets.” At first, I think she’s seriously pissed about crumbs when she tries to lift her lips into a smile but fails. Her face is a blotchy red that matches her hair, and her eyes are puffy.

Ah, she’s still mad at Barrett after their argument, not me.

“It’s not my bed or my sheets,” I joke. “What’s up with you? You look like you’ve been crying.”

“Bear and I had an argument. I think it’s over.”

“Oh. Damn. Sorry, Ly.” Over? Jesus. It must have been even more serious than it sounded.

“Then my father was being a dick like usual.”

“Eh, what else is new?” I say since that’s par for the course for Isaac.

“How are you feeling?”

“Great.” When she stares at me as if expecting me to say more, to explain why I’m here if I’m doing so great, I add, “If I had a home to go back to, I would, but I lost my place when I didn’t pay last month’s rent or answer my phone.”

“Shit, I’m so sorry, Thane.”

“It’s fine. RJ knows and is letting me stay here until I find another place.”

“Are you well enough for a road trip?”

A road trip? Get out of this room, this house, and away from obsessing about how RJ feels about me? “Hell yes. When and where?” I ask.

“Atlanta and, um, now?”

Oh hell. This girl isn’t playing around. “Now, now?”

“Yes. You don’t have to come with me.”

Right, I’ll just stay here and have Isaac murder me for letting her go off on her own. “Of course I’m coming with you. Give me a minute to pack my shit.”

“Take your time. In fact, let me get my things together, then I’ll come pack for you.”

“Nah, I can handle it. Do what you need to do,” I assure her.

“Okay, thanks for agreeing to come with me.”

While I’m packing, I hear Bear return to the house, followed by more arguing.

If I had to guess, Lyla is going to be ready to flee any second now.

Hefting my full duffle bag onto my shoulder, I glance around the room to make sure I got everything. I should probably check RJ’s room and tell him I’m leaving too.

From his doorway, I watch him peeling the sheets off the bed. The ones we ruined last night.

“Hey,” I tell him softly.
