“I just can’t. I’m sorry,”

“You’re sorry?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve been lying to me for weeks, haven’t you?”

“It’s not as bad as you think. It was for the best, okay? Can you just trust me on that? The guy was after you. He’s dead now.”

“Yes, I know. I was there. I saw you kill him.”

“And you know I did it to protect you and my brother.”

“Is that the only reason?”

He lowers his gaze when he says, “Yes.”

“You’re lying. I don’t know about what or why, but I need to go see my father.”

“Lyla, it’s not my place to… Let me take you over there. To see him.”

“No, Barrett. You had your chance to be honest with me. Let’s see if my dad will tell me the truth or not since I can’t get it from you.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Barrett

“Lyla’s on her way to see you,” I warn Isaac.

“Okay?”

“She found the folder about Dockery you gave me and was asking questions.”

“You didn’t tell her, did you?”

“No, of course not. But you need to tell her the truth. You have to fix this shit, Isaac!”

“So she has questions. If we keep our mouths shut, then she’ll eventually give up.”

“Or she’ll never forgive us.”

“It’s a small price to pay to keep her in the dark on this.”

“I hate this!”

“Suck it up, Fulton. Don’t go soft on me now,” he says before hehangs up on me.

Lyla

Every mile I drive away from Barrett’s to the Devil Hounds’ clubhouse makes me grow angrier.

I can’t believe he’s keeping secrets with my father. And even when I caught him red-handed, he wouldn’t give me the truth.

When I get to the clubhouse, I march into the bar with the folder and jog up the stairs to my father’s office, ignoring his men who try to speak to me.

“Who is this?” I ask from the doorway, holding up one of the pages from the folder.

My dad barely looks up from his phone he’s typing on to glance at the mug shot. “A dead man.”
