The conversation with Aaron Cooper really unsettled me. I got threats from my father all the time, but I was never really afraid because they were from my father. Aaron, on the other hand, could really make my life miserable. It wasn’t impossible for him to have me removed as CEO. Not just because he was highly respected by my dad, but he was also the company’s biggest shareholder, which meant his wishes were highly prioritized.

I was sure that if it came down to me or Mr. Cooper, my father would go for the latter. I stopped caring a long time ago, but it was hard to not get hurt by my father’s actions sometimes. I often wondered if he even saw me as his own flesh and blood. Ever since my mom left, I had always felt like a stranger. He made sure of it. I guess he still saw parts of her that hurt him in me, but I couldn’t care less. I was his son, regardless.

“Are you going to see Jordan again soon?” I asked.

“Yes, immediately after I submit this to your brother,” she said, as she yanked the clipboard from my hands.

“Great, I'm done for the day. I could take you there,” I offered.

“It’s not even the afternoon yet.”

“CEO perks,” I teased, and she rolled her eyes.

“Your brother is on his way to drop some equipment. I’ll wait for him, then we can go,” she insisted.

“Then I will wait for him, too.”

The door opened, and Damien walked into the office.

“Hey, Daniel.”

“What’s up?” I replied wryly.

“Sorry to interrupt, but I’ll need you to sign some papers, Amy,” he said, handing some documents to her.

“I really appreciate you doing this, Damien.” she said as she scribbled on the papers. “Alright, here you go.”

He was about to say something, but I interrupted.

“Amy and I have somewhere to go, if you don’t mind,” I informed him. I didn’t miss the way Amy arched an eyebrow in my direction. She looked irritated.

“Okay, I didn’t realize that,” he raised his hands as if trying to surrender. “I’ll be out of your way then. See you later, Amy. Daniel.” He put one hand up in farewell, nodded towards me, and walked briskly out.

“What was that?” Amy inquired.

“Nothing. Meet me in the parking garage in ten,” I ordered.

We got to Jordan’s room, and this time I was able to see her face clearly, as she wasn't in a ventilator mask anymore. She was a gorgeous child and looked just like her mother. She and Amy talked shortly before turning their attention to me.

“Jordan, I want to introduce you to someone.”

“Who? Your boyfriend?”

“No, who told you I have a boyfriend?” Amy quizzed, squinting her eyes.

“Mom.” Jordan chuckled.

“Of course she did,” Amy laughed. “This is Daniel. He's the man I'm working with on my research.”

“He’s cute.”

I tried to hide a soft chuckle.

“Jordan, focus.”

“Hey, I'm Daniel,” I said, lifting up my hand in greeting and relieving Amy of the duty of introductions. It clearly hadn’t been going the way she wanted.

“I’m Jordan.” She gave a small wave from the bed.
