“Aren’t you and Roxie together?” I asked, my heart slamming against my ribs and not in excitement.

Panic. That was the feeling rushing through my bloodstream after Hawk kissed me.

His head jerked back. “Roxie and I aren’t together. Why would you think that?”

“Because you’ve been hooking up.” To put more space between us, I stood and backed up, hitting a shelf.

Hawk’s brow furrowed. “Did she tell you that?”

“People talk.” I motioned my hand around, referring to the other ravens. “I have ears.” Technically, I discovered they were hooking up months ago when I snuck into Corvin Manor and had the pleasure of witnessing it.

Hawk cursed and jammed his fingers through his hair. “We’re not together. It was friends with benefits. And it’s over.” He palmed the back of his neck as a blush flooded his cheeks. “Now that you’re back, I thought we could, you know, try again.”

I clamped my lids shut and rubbed my temples as a headache pounded against my skull. “It’s not that simple.”

Why couldn’t it be that simple? There was no one else…

The tattoo on my neck tingled as an image of the demon shifter materialized in my mind. That searing stare burned into me, calling me a liar.

Fuck him.

Hands pressed against my cheeks, and Hawk’s fresh citrus scent spilled up my nose. “Look at me, Tate.”

I couldn’t resist the pleading in his voice, so I opened my eyes to find his barely more than an inch away, the gold filaments glowing.

“I want to be with you.” His thumb stroked my cheekbone. “After almost losing you, I realize how much you mean to me, and I want another chance to prove that.”

He finally admitted his feelings for me, something I’d wanted for so long, but it didn’t feel like it should. Even if he claimed it was only physical, his relationship with Roxie still overshadowed his declaration.

“I’ll beg if I have to.” Hawk’s gruff, uneven voice urged me to relent. “I’ll get on my knees and everything.”

Why was I being so stupid? So what if he and Roxie had fooled around while I was gone? I hadn’t been a perfect angel, either. I’d hooked up with Fane multiple times and had kissed Ruin not long ago. I would have done more with the demon lord had we not been interrupted.

This was my chance to finally have what I’d spent years pining for. He threatened to beg for shit’s sake.

But how would he react if he knew I wasn’t a raven or even human anymore? Would he feel the same if he knew I was some hybrid shifter with a powerful and destructive demon amulet stuck inside?

Would he still want me if he knew the terrible secrets buried in my past?

Hawk’s hands fell, and he started to lower to the ground.

“You don’t have to beg.” I gripped his t-shirt and hauled him upright.

A smile melted over his face. “I was hoping you’d say that.” Hawk’s lips pressed against mine, and this time, I couldn’t push him off before his tongue shoved into my mouth.

When I said he didn’t have to beg, that didn’t mean I was giving in, but as he kissed me, I didn’t have the heart to break away.

Hawk groaned as he slid his tongue over mine, tasting me. I wrapped my arms around his neck and let him continue his exploration. “I’ve been dreaming about this forever,” he murmured, breaking the kiss for only a second.

I tried to ignore the little voice in my head screaming that I wanted to be with someone else and this was all wrong.

It wasn’t wrong. I’d been dreaming about this for years, and now it was happening.

It was perfect.

Perfectly wrong.

A growl vibrated my throat, and I dug my nails into his shoulders. Hawk took my frustration for excitement and rocked his hips forward as his hands pressed into my ass, grinding his erection into the apex between my thighs.
