After a few moments, Logan cleared his throat. “I can see that Fane is a touchy subject. Clearly, there are some intense emotions between you.”

My gaze flicked to his, narrowing. “Yeah, anger and more anger.”

Logan ignored the waves of animosity pouring off me and stood. “Oh, I almost forgot.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a necklace with a citrine stone dangling on the end. “This Arcaina talisman should block Fane’s mental presence. Think of it as my apology for my part in deceiving you.”

I took it and met his vibrant blue eyes. All high demons and royals had the same color—and even the dux demons with their glamours—but none of them ever held as much kindness as Logan’s did.

“Thanks,” I muttered, letting the stone hang from my fingers.

A boyish smile tugged at his lips, melting the ice around my heart even more. “You don’t have to wear it, of course.”

“Why wouldn’t I wear it?”

The demon shrugged. “Just saying…”

He didn’t believe I wanted to dampen this link with Fane.

He couldn’t be more wrong.

I tossed the chain over my neck and grinned. “I’ll gladly wear it.”

“Whatever you say, Tate.” Logan threw another handful of candy into his mouth and chewed. “Want to get out of here? I know a secret way to sneak into Wrath & Ruin.”

“That’s a bad idea, especially with Venna out there.” I gave the punching bag a lazy kick.

Logan scoffed. “I doubt that devil would step foot in Ruin’s club.” He motioned his finger around the room. “You must be tired of being cooped up in this house.”

I absentmindedly traced the circular scars running over my ribs. “Well, I haven’t really been out in weeks.”

A mischievous grin spread over Logan’s mouth. “Get dressed. We’re going to have some fun tonight.”

And probably get into some trouble.

ChapterEight

Music thrummed through the air,and the base vibrated in my chest as we climbed a narrow flight of stairs to Ruin’s private VIP area on the second level in Wrath & Ruin. Cold sweat slinked down my nape, and my hands grew clammy as the walls closed in.

This is not that closet, Tate. You are fine. You are not locked in.

I repeated the mantra until we reached the landing, and Logan pushed the door open, leading out into a large, unoccupied sitting area. A ragged breath blew from my lungs as I stepped onto the glossy hardwoods, colorful lights bouncing on the shiny leather furniture and glass tabletops.

“This is great, right?” Logan looked over his shoulder and grinned, oblivious to the panic attack that had nearly consumed me.

“Yeah. Great.” My smile stretched tightly over my gritted teeth, but the high demon was too preoccupied with the sudden stimuli to notice.

Why did I think sneaking in here was a good idea? Ruin would be pissed when he found out.

Since when did I care if the demon lord got mad? I promised him I’d cooperate and not attempt another escape. I wasn’t trying to run. I was only next door.

I tugged the necklace out of my cropped t-shirt and toyed with the citrine stone dangling from the end. Hopefully, this would work much better at blocking Fane than the Draught of Serenity, which didn’t work for shit.

What if Ididuse this opportunity to flee? I had what I wanted. Maybe.

My gaze wandered to Logan who swayed his hips to the beat of the music, grinning like a puppy with a new toy. Creating Soulvation would help Logan, and even though he’d kept me in the dark about Fane, he never outright lied to me like the demon shifter.

Countless other demons could be helped, and lives would be saved if Ruin could manufacture a soul supplement. Maybe being a pseudo prisoner in the demon lord’s home wasn’t so bad. I deserved worse.

“Want a drink?” Logan asked as he shimmied toward me.
