What the hell am I saying!

A tear slipped down my cheek, and he caught it with his thumb. “Please, Teague. Do you remember who I am?”

“How could I forget?” I tilted my head up, and my lids fluttered. “My monster. Covered in blood again. It’s my favorite time.”

One of his hands brushed over a spot on my neck where ebony symbols marked my skin. “Fucking remember, Tate.”

A moan spilled out of my mouth as a pleasurable jolt crackled over the tattoo. Flashes of us ravaging each other in the woods bled through my mind.

“Well, well, what do we have here?”

My head jerked to the right as a royal in black leather slinked into the room, three dux demons flanking her on each side.

ChapterForty-Four

The beastnext to me stepped forward, but I pulled him back and quickly moved in front of him, a low, malevolent growl snaking between my teeth. The royal’s desire for his pain infiltrated the air, pouring hot fury through my bloodstream.

This demon wanted to hurt him. She wanted to chain him up and turn his insides outside.

“I will grind your bones into dust before you lay a finger on him.” My voice didn’t sound like my own, wrapped in a layer of thorns and dripping malice.

The royal demon’s white hair gleamed in the shadows as if it had its own illumination. “Do you really think you can take me, little girl?”

“I am many things, but a little girl is not one of them.” Talons grew from my fingers again, and I licked my lips. Which one of her guards should I destroy first?

She cocked her head. “You have no idea what the Infernal Sol is capable of. You haven’t even tasted a fraction of its power.”

I cracked my knuckles and smiled. “You’re right. Maybe it’s time I dig a little deeper.” I jerked my chin to Furic who curled into a ball on the ground, shivering. His fears still played through his mind on a loop. Soon, he’d be just as mad as a hatter. “I loved toying with him. I think I’d enjoy your fears even more. They would be delicious.”

Her blue eyes glowed too brightly against the shadows coiling around her. “I have no fear.”

“Everyone does. Even you.” I stepped forward, but my beast tugged me back.

The royal laughed. “Look at you, Fane Maverick, protecting your brother’s killer.” She pursed her blood-red lips. “She’ll slaughter you too.”

His body curved into mine in a show of protection. “Not before I kill you.”

She snapped her fingers. “Bring her in.”

Two more dux demons emerged from one of the halls branching off the main room, bringing in a female demon bound in heavy mystical restraints around her wrists. Her raven hair flowed to her tiny waist, and something familiar about her blue eyes prodded my memories.

Panic and agony erupted through the beast, and he stepped forward, a roar bursting from his mouth.

The royal snatched the other female and put a dagger to her neck. “I wouldn’t do that if you want her to keep breathing, Fane.” She tsked. “You went through so much trouble to free her from Heldrok, and now her life is inmyhands.”

“You bitch.” The male high demon with golden-brown hair standing near the door set his bloody and bruised friend on the velvet couch. “You’re going to die for this, Venna.”

She scoffed. “Sit down, Logan. You’re not going to do a damn thing.”

I turned to the beast, his focus locked on the woman as fine tremors rippled through his muscles.

Who was she? Why did she mean so much to him? Why did seeing her in danger terrify him?

A malicious growl crawled up my throat, making him flinch. He didn’t tear his attention away from the woman, but he wrapped his hand around my arm, his fingers digging in and bruising me.

“Fane, I’m so sorry.” The mystery woman’s voice came out in a soft, lyrical lilt. When she angled her head, the moonlight highlighted a row of vertical scars raking down her left cheek and extending to her neck. The marks didn’t detract from her delicate beauty, though. They just made it more heartbreaking. “I thought going home was safe. I never—”

Venna pressed the knife to the woman’s neck, drawing a line of black blood. “Was your deal with Ruin worth it? Are you happy you traded your brother’s killer for Kesandra?”
