Each time I relied on the amulet, the more control it gained. Fane was certain he could bring me back from the edge of darkness, but I knew a day would come when even his savage desire wouldn’t be enough to break me free.

I’d be lost.

I just hoped like hell today was not that day.

“I’ll do it.”

As soon as my words slipped into Fane’s mind, he charged the massive dux demon.

“Tate, watch out!” Ruin shouted as a swarm of demons on the right rushed me.

I dropped to the ground and rolled beneath their legs, catching them off guard. It allowed me the opportunity to snatch the hilt from my boot and activate the sword. As I spun, I chopped off the closest demon’s head, his gold horns scraping across the polished floor.

Talons slashed at my back, searing my flesh. I pivoted and slammed my sword into the demon’s sternum, black blood spurting out of the wound and his mouth. My pulse thundered as two beasts advanced on me.

I kicked one of them away and cursed as I slipped on a puddle of blood. There’s too many of them!

My heartbeats crashed against each other as I cautiously tried to only reach for the shifter power within me. Warmth, like standing in front of a fire on a cold night, pushed through my veins, and my muscles filled with heat, but it was nothing like the intense flood of lava the Infernal Sol brought.

A shaky breath of relief blew from my lungs because I’d managed to leave the demon amulet slumbering while I held onto the shifter power. The scarlet and black room brightened as my eyes adjusted to my wolf senses.

While distracted, another demon lunged on my right, but I easily parried his attack and sank my blade into his chest to keep his sharp teeth from my neck. He swiped at me with his long claws, and I had to drop to the ground, leaving the sword in his torso.

The demon yanked out my weapon and tossed it far out of my reach.

Son of a bitch.

My heart tapped out a frantic beat as I scrambled up, but he grabbed the collar of my jacket before I could go far, lifted me from the ground, and hurled me across the room.

As I hit the hard floor, pain slammed against my skull and spine, and blood oozed up the back of my throat, coating my tongue. I rolled over and spat a glob out as the room whirled. A dux demon straddled me and attempted to pry my mouth open.

“I bet your soul tastes yummy.” Her neon-green irises glowed as she lowered, salivating over my soul.

I struggled beneath her and tried to buck her off as my head spun. She was a hell of a lot stronger than she looked, though. And determined. Her pink hair skimmed my shoulders when she leaned so far forward that her lips almost brushed mine.

As she touched my soul, it broke away from my center and jolted forward, agonizingly scraping over my ribs.

And then she was gone.

My lungs expanded, and I took a deep, shaky breath as another figure emerged over me. I lifted my leg to kick him until I saw a familiar smile.

“Hey, pretty roomie.” Logan grabbed my arm to haul me up. “You and Fane are magnets for trouble.”

I hugged him. “What are you doing here?”

“Saving your asses.” He jerked his head toward Perry and Dirgos—the demon who tried to get the Infernal Sol out before Karn’s underlings captured me—as they freed Ruin from the chains.

Fane fought Mykel and three other demons on the left of the grand room. Heads and body parts already littered the ground around him. Feeling my stare, his attention yanked in my direction, relief flashing over his expression when he saw Logan next to me.

The demon shifter quickly returned to his battle as Mykel reared back to punch his chin, but Fane blocked the hit and slammed his elbow into the giant demon’s side.

“Grab your sword, and let’s finish off these ugly bitches.” Logan flicked his hand to the right where my sword had slid under the tufted red velvet couch.

“Gladly.” I jogged to the fancy settee, bent, and retrieved the hilt.

A presence materialized behind me, and I pivoted, slicing the demon’s head off before she could even land a hit.

Pain suddenly exploded across the back of my head, and glass rained around me.
