“He was much worse,”the demon shifter said into my mind.

Camus released his harsh grip from Dorian’s neck, and the beta lifted his head, staring at the coffee table as a flush burned his cheeks. He had to be humiliated that Camus admonished him in front of the head alpha.

Good. Dorian deserved it.

Barric cleared his throat, brushing off the incident between the Mohan alpha and his beta. “If possible, I’d also like you to speak to Ruin about the missing shifters and inquire if demons could be in the mix. With the tension between the demon lord and me, it might sound like less of an accusation coming from you.”

He was probably right.

“I doubt Ruin has anything to do with this,” Fane said, his gruff voice vibrating my back. “But it should be brought to his attention. I’ll do it.”

“That’s great.” Barric grabbed his tea to take a sip, the ice clinking on the sides as he drew it to his mouth. “The sooner, the better.”

Fane’s fingers splayed on my ribs. “I’ll go now. And I’ll walk you out.”

Ephraim winced at Fane’s harsh tone, but the head alpha wasn’t bothered.

“When you’re done with Ruin, please stop by my pack house and give me an update.” Barric grabbed a cracker from the tray. “I’m sure you’d like to say goodbye to Tate.”

Fane stood, taking me with him, and he pulled me into the kitchen, still within their view. “I’ll be back in a few hours.”

The stainless steel appliances and white countertops blurred as the realization dawned on me.“Are you sure leaving me here alone right now is a good idea?”What if I freaked out again?

His hands curled around my shoulders, squeezing. “You’ll be fine. Sleep in my room if I’m not back until late.”

“What about Venna? She wants your head on a stake too.”

He scoffed.“I can handle her.”Fane’s face dipped forward, and he brushed my nose with his as Barric watched us. “Stop stalling.”

“I’m not.”

“You’re cute when you pout, fiera mika.” He hooked a finger in my belt loop and drew me into him, his lips falling on mine. As his tongue slid into my mouth, his delectable flavor hit me, and I lifted onto my toes and melted into him. A deep rumble shook his chest and then crawled up his throat as he teased and tasted me.

The kiss was for show, and he meant to end it quickly, but something changed, and his arm curled around my waist as his other hand slipped into my hair, fingers tugging on the roots. The heat from him enfolded me like a warm fire on a frigid night, chasing away all my worries.

We’d shared plenty of kisses before, but this… was different. We usually fought and battled each other for dominance, lips snarling, tongues tangling, and teeth clashing.

Not this time. Every fiber of my being surrendered to the fire boiling in my center, spreading to my limbs as my muscles turned pliant. We melded like two hard chunks of metal being forged together in scolding flames.

Electricity crackled between us, and throbs pulsated low in my belly, extending to my core. The entire world fell away as if an apocalypse had wiped everything and everyone out except us. A resonant moan slipped from Fane, and my knees weakened, so his arm tightened around my waist to keep me upright.

What the hell was wrong with us? We should probably stop now. But neither of us showed any signs of slowing or actual brain activity not focused on this kiss.

Someone cleared his throat, finally bursting our little lust bubble. “I’d still like to have you patrol an area tonight, Tate.” Alpha Camus called from the living room. “I can have another wolf—a female—go with you.”

“Yeah. Sure. Fine.” Why did my voice have to sound so damn breathy?

The cocky grin curving Fane’s mouth made me want to hit him. “Don’t get into any fights with other shifters while you’re on patrol.” He licked his lips, and his searing gaze dipped to my mouth like he considered going in for another kiss.

I swallowed back the moan that wanted to break free. “I’ll try.”

“Try hard.” Fane put another inch of separation between us, adjusting his pants with a wince. “Don’t make me come back here and punish you.”

Fire spread into my cheeks as images of his brand of punishment played through my mind. “Now you’re just provoking me.”

His smile said he knew exactly what he was doing.

But Iwouldtry to stay out of trouble, especially after how easily I lost control last night. Fane would only be gone a few hours. I could keep my shit together.
