Levi stood frozen, shocked I’d killed his partner, giving me the chance to sprint for the door.

“What are you doing, idiot!” Vox yelled. “Get her.”

My fingers gripped the knob, and I yanked the door open, stumbling into the smoky room. A sensory overload hit me as the music, echoes of pleasure, and scents of sweat, alcohol, and sex blended together. The drugs in my system pushed through my defenses, and I stumbled into the bar.

No. Not again.

“Where the fuck do you think you’re going?” Vox grabbed my hair and yanked me into him. He twisted my wrist, forcing me to drop the bloody sword, but before he could shove me back into the other room, a crash reverberated, and screams penetrated the lusty haze in the atmosphere.

Danica, who finally woke up, scrambled forward with Levi at her side, ready to slaughter whoever had disturbed the party.

As some of the smoke cleared, two glowing orbs appeared, scorching through the shadows like flaming weapons directed at the demons attacking me. Bloodlust dripped from those familiar eyes as a flash of crimson bubbled beneath the blue and gold. A broad figure emerged, every muscle tensed as a snarl stolen from nightmares pulled his lips apart.

In all his terrifying glory, Fane Maverick marched forward, an air of murder and pure rage pulsating from him.

Vox didn’t release me as he spoke. “This is none of your con—”

Fane’s huge fist sailed over my head and crushed Vox’s face.

The demon’s hold fell away, and I stumbled into the bar again, grabbing a leather and chrome stool to keep from falling. Fane didn’t blink as he lifted his hand, those lethal talons protruding out, and sliced Vox’s head clean off with one swipe.

Danica shrieked and darted for the door to escape the demon shifter’s wrath. My blood boiled like lava from an erupting volcano oozing into the ocean. She wasnotgetting away.

I grabbed the sword from the ground and sprinted after her. My fingers tangled in her hair, and her screech rang out over the music as I ripped her head back and slung her around, smashing her into the nearest table.

Black blood gushed out of her nose. “Get off!” She kicked me onto a couch with two demons getting it on. Once the unfolding carnage broke through their lust-bubble, they bolted and disappeared from the murky room.

As Danica charged me, an object rolled across the ground, tripping her. When she finally caught her balance, the color drained from her cheeks as she stared at Levi’s decapitated head.

Fane stepped behind her and shoved her toward me. I jumped from the couch, whipped the sword through the air, and sliced Danica’s head off.

My breaths came in heavy, ragged pants, and tremors raced through my body. Now that the immediate danger had been extinguished, fatigue poured through my muscles, and my legs gave out, dropping me back to the couch. The sword fell from my grip.

Fane kneeled in front of me. He remained silent as his burning gaze roamed over every inch of me, anger bursting in those mismatched irises like solar flares. He gently brushed a piece of hair off my cheek, uncovering a bruise.

His jaw clenched so hard his teeth ground over the music. He grabbed the sword from the ground and rubbed the rune to transform it into a dagger before shoving it in my boot.

How did he know I was in trouble? If he hadn’t come, I wasn’t sure I could have escaped without them dragging me back to that room and down those stairs.

Unshed tears burned in my eyes.

Do not cry!

“I had that handled. Didn’t need you to save me.” My words came out slurred, and Fane arched one eyebrow, but he didn’t argue or call bullshit. “How did you find me, Maverick?”

He rolled his neck and shuddered as if experiencing an unpleasant sensation. “You weren’t hard to find. All I had to do was follow the raging emotions slamming into my skull.”

“So sorry I interrupted your date with Marissa,” I snapped.

“Let’s go.” He ignored my dig and gripped my arms to pull me off the couch. The moment his fingers—even covered in demon blood—touched my bare skin, a wave of intense heat from the Rapture swept over me, and I bit my lip to choke back the moan.

It didn’t matter, though. The tempest in his expression told me he sensed the storm of lust crashing through me.

“This is pushing shit too far, Fane.” The bartender who drugged me the first time appeared, surveying the damage. Everyone had cleared out of the room. “Ruin’s going to be pissed.”

Fane moved in front of me, still rippling with fury, and leaned toward the demon. “Tell the high demon lord they had something ofmine.”

The last word, mine, came out in a ferocious, feral roar that hit me right in the gut. Air whooshed out of my lungs, and my knees buckled. Fane caught me around the waist, tucking me into him.
