“Don’t be,” she laughed lightly. “Even if Gin here got stabbed, he’d make it sound like a bee sting, so it’s nice someone takes injuries seriously around here.”

“You’ve been stabbed?”

Giancarlo looked at me like I was crazy. I shook my head.Stupid comment. The doc moved around me and got situated in front of Giancarlo. She pulled the coffee table I’d moved back to its previous position.

“Melony, this is Ash. Ash, Melony. She’s our doc. Mel runs a low-end clinic with her gir—”

“By myself.”

Giancarlo whistled. “What happened to the future Mrs?”

Melony scoffed as she wiped at his knuckles. “Fell in love and is now touring with some band as a groupie.”

“Ouch, doc. Need a hit out on her?”

I sucked in a sharp breath. Giancarlo glanced my way. There was zero indication he’d been joking.

“Not needed. The lead singer came in with crabs. I gave him some bullshit meds to take care of it.” She shrugged. “But this isn’t as serious as I thought it was,” she muttered, peering at his hand more closely. “Better call your brothers and tell them before they show up.”

Giancarlo groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose as he slouched against the sofa. “No matter what I say now, they’re definitely coming.”

“Sorry.” I peeked over Melony’s shoulder and watched as she numbed him with a needle that looked entirely too big.

Gin had gone pale, his eyes wide as saucers as he stared at it. He tried to pull away, but she kept his hand steady.

“Don’t be. If it were up to this guy, he’d wait till he was bleeding out and close to death’s door before calling me,” Melony said.

The thought of Giancarlo dying made me ill. The air in my lungs rushed out. I stared at him, committing every inch of his face to memory down to the lines in the corner of his eyes.

“Doc!” Giancarlo yanked me down to the sofa with his other hand. “I ain’t dead,” he growled at me. “Stop looking at me like you’re picturing my funeral.”

Melony chuckled. “You’re right. This time you are, in fact, not dying. Good thing you have someone by your side watching out for you.” She looked at me. “Keep him on his toes, Ash. He looks tough, but he’s the biggest baby.”

“The hell I am.”

“I will,” I promised.

“Now I’m being ignored,” he muttered.

The front door opened again. I looked up at a man in a suit with metal-rimmed glasses. His facial hair was trimmed, and his dark brown hair was gelled back. He was shorter than Giancarlo, but I knew instantly by how he carried himself that he had to be another brother of his. Which meant he was Enzo.

“What did he do now?”

“He beat the living shit out of a customer at Silver Dreams,” Benito said.

The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I pressed myself firmly against Giancarlo when the oldest Vitale brother joined us. It was like being in a room full of predators. I might as well have had floppy ears and a cotton tail. A shiver ran up my spine.Yeah, I don’t like that imagery.

“He deserved it,” Giancarlo huffed.

“He’s in the goddamn hospital,” Benito countered.

“And this is an emergency how?” Enzo asked.

I swallowed thickly and sat up. “Giancarlo was bleeding a lot, and he told me to call the doctor. I didn’t mean to make it sound—”

“Like my brother was dying?” Enzo asked.

Ice raced down my spine as he took a step forward. Giancarlo was up in a flash. Melony moved just in time to avoid being knocked back. She huffed but looked as if she was used to them.
