More than likely, he was the one who had sent Able to my office to try to feel me out. Too bad for him; I never let anyone see me sweat. Especially not them.

“Here’s your coffee.”

I opened my eyes as Ash bounced back through the door with two mugs in hand. He sat one down on my desk before he settled into a seat and peered at me over the rim of his mug. I already knew what he was waiting for.

I picked up my coffee, drank some, and nodded in approval. “This is good.”

“You sure? You asked if I poached the lobster in sewage water.”

I choked on my drink before I grunted to clear my throat. “I was a little sick and cranky this morning, that’s all. Your coffee is great.”

“And my food?”

I quickly busied myself with drinking more caffeine while I clicked away on my computer. Honestly, I wasn’t even clicking on anything. I just needed the noise to cover the fact that I was avoiding the hell out of his question.

“Asshole,” Ash muttered.

I smothered the chuckle that threatened to tumble free. Just like that, all of my tension about the Weston/Hollister situation was pushed down as I stole glances at him. Ash’s eyes met mine, and he smiled so hard it made my heart skip a beat.

No, I have to focus! What the hell am I doing?

Benito was right; Ash was a distraction. One that I wasn’t ready to let go of yet.

Ash kept squirmingaround in his seat like someone had dropped cockroaches in his pants. Yes, exactly like that. I’d done it to a guy once. He kept shifting around like he would piss himself. I glanced at Ash again before he looked at me and quickly averted his gaze.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

I stopped at a red light before I leaned over. “That’s bullshit.”

“Shit!” he shouted, jumping as he shot away from me. I laughed as he glared daggers my way. “That’s not funny. You scared the hell out of me!”

“Why?” I asked. “What are you thinking about so hard that you forgot I exist? I’m starting to feel a little offended.”

Ash shook his head hard. “I didn’t forget you existed!” he argued before he pushed himself back into his seat. “I was just daydreaming.”

“About?”

“Nothing,” he answered.

My stomach clenched.Yeah, hate that.I wasn’t exactly entitled to every thought that passed through his brain, but on some level, wasn’t I? I was housing and taking care of Ash, so why the hell couldn’t I know what he was thinking about?

“Tell me.”

Ash crossed his arms over his chest. “No.”

I blinked at him. “Wow,you’retelling me no?”

“Y-you act like you want me to say what I want, so don’t take it back now,” he muttered.

I looked him over. He was right about that. Something about really quiet people made me want to shake them up and get them talking. For some reason, that was amplified when I looked at Ash. He was so meek, reserved, but there was a fire in his eyes every once in a while that he quickly smothered when I noticed it.

I wanted to see more of that fire. I wanted to be licked by his flames.

“What?”Ash asked. “The light’s green.”

“Nothing.”
