“True, but I promise I wouldn’t,” he says as I drop down on the other side before reaching out with my power and lifting the group of people up. I set them down near the side of the building Nolan is in. Then I have to run as hard as I can to catch up with them since I can’t float my own ass over there—which I find horribly unfair.

I manage to just make it to the blind spot right before time starts up again.

Reaching Nolan’s window, August pins Ned against the wall so he can’t get away.

Nolan slides the window open and looks through the bars with a grin on his face. “Alright, hello there, Ned,” he says.

I’d sent him a list of questions earlier that I’m sure he’s memorized by now. He’s always been that kind of person, while I would refuse out of pure laziness. Nolan would probably give Valerie a run for her money when it comes to keeping things in line. I think he learned the trait at a young age from having to deal with our family.

“Who the fuck are you?” Ned asks, still unable to see.

“Who do you work for?” Nolan interrupts, voice staying steady.

“Who the fuck are you?” Ned repeats as Nolan writes something down on a piece of paper.

“You know he gave you up, right?” Nolan asks, and I know he’s playing mind tricks on him. He explained to me before how you can get names from people when you manipulate questions in a way that makes the person think of who you’re wanting to know about. Ask them straight out, they might hide information, but the moment they think that there’s the possibility of having been betrayed, they’ll think about things that’ll give away the answer.

Ned hesitates. “I don’t know who the hell you’re talking about.”

“Why’d you do it? You worked for Superheroes United for years, and then suddenly decide to shift sides?”

Ned shakes his head as he tries to get free from August, but August holds him tight. “Let me go.”

“Who else is working with you?” Nolan asks, shifting the question again as he writes quickly, which tells me he’s getting some answers.

“Let… me…go,” Ned growls as he tries to shake August off, but with August’s power of strength, he’s not getting anywhere.

“How many of them are there?”

The man is nearly vibrating with anger as he twists and shifts. “All you fucking freaks need to die.”

My phone vibrates in my pocket, so I pull it out and look down at the message from Ellison warning us that someone seems to have caught on to something and is heading this way.

I glance up at Nolan and show him the text.

“I got some stuff,” he says as he passes me the paper that he was writing on. I pull it from between the bars before he slides his window shut. August gives the bound man a push, and I use my telekinesis to gently pass him off in the direction of the oncoming guard. We’ll be able to watch to make sure he doesn’t get anywhere he’s not supposed to go as we make our grand escape.

August freezes time and we repeat what we did earlier with August helping me over the fence first before I move the others over.

“I’m going to stay here and watch to make sure there are no problems,” Deus says as he turns invisible.

“Okay, meet us at the car and call if there are issues,” August says.

“Will do!” Deus says.

We head straight out into a cornfield in the hopes of breaking away from the view of the cameras and putting some distance between us before going back to meet up with Ellison. It’s a pretty straightforward path, and as long as Deus doesn’t run into any trouble, we’ll be out and on our way before they’re even aware we were ever here.

“This way,” August says as he rushes forward, and I quickly follow him before the realization that I don’t hear anyone behind me hits me.

“Lex?” I ask as I turn around and find that it’s just August and me. “August, where’s Lex?”

August stills as we listen for the sound of rustling leaves, but I don’t hear anything. “He was right behind us.”

“I know,” I say as the cornstalks suddenly rustle, making me freeze, but within seconds a panting Lex stumbles onto the scene.

“You guys ran ahead without me!” he says.

“You were right behind us!”
