“Why the hell do we have to break out of this place like we’re prisoners?” I grumble. “I’ll just… conveniently break it.”

“You can, but the moment you do, you need to be prepared to move. There will be three cameras you’ll have to disable in total, then we’ll have to go past security and out the door.”

“I’ll handle security,” Deus says.

“They have to bealiveby the end,” Ellison adds.

“I will not handle security,” Deus says.

“I can freeze time,” August suggests.

“I’d prefer you didn’t and saved it for later,” Ellison says. “I’ll distract the guard. Just be prepared to move on my command because Iamallowed out of the building. Everyone ready?”

Deus looks excited. “We need like a team name and a catch phrase.”

“We don’t, trust me,” Ellison says dryly.

“Something like ‘We’re here to off you or get you off. The choice is yours. Praise be the demons,’” Deus says, which is probably one of the least helpful things he’s ever said.

Lex holds up a finger. “I’m sorry but I’m not getting anyone off, thank you very much.”

Deus shrugs. “I mean… to each their own, I guess.”

Ellison scans the crowd before locking eyes with me. “Can you please… just throw him?”

“How far?”

“Very far.”

“Yeah, sure,” I say but when I turn to Deus, he’s become invisible. I can hear him breathing heavily behind me as he walks, which he has to be doing to creep me out.

“This is a psych tactic,” he explains in my ear. “It’s meant to unsettle you.”

“I’m plenty unsettled, thank you.”

“Ready?” Ellison asks.

“Yeah,” I say as I crush the camera before moving swiftly to the next. We take three down before he holds us back and then heads over to the security guard at the entrance.

“Good evening, Hank, I’m headed out for the night,” Ellison says.

“Headed back this late?”

“There are a few things I need to take care of before morning.”

I glance over at the door where another Ellison is waving to us, but what is even more fascinating is that there’s a third Ellison behind the guard inputting something into the computer.

August tugs my arm, snapping me out of staring as we’re ushered through the open doorway. I knew that Ellison could split himself, but to have enough control to managethreebodies, having them work independently… that goes beyond an illusion, doesn’t it? The other times he did it, they were all doing something similar like walking, not like this.

August slides a card and inputs the code that Ellison the Second tells him before slipping through the unlocked door and out into the night.

Within minutes, Ellison comes out alone and holds his hand out to August who gives him the card.

“How exactly does that work?” I ask, genuinely curious.

“The one at the computer was you, right?” Deus asks.

Ellison nods. “It was.”
