He smiles. “Of course.”

I’m far too relieved when they finally allow me next to Landon. He’s dozing and I want to hear his voice, but I let him rest as I reach out and take his hand. After about ten minutes he groggily opens his eyes and looks over at me.

“The shit they got me on is some good shit,” he says. “I feel like I could fly.”

“Please don’t try.”

“I bet it was Deus’s demon prayer that helped. He in here?”

I look around but honestly have no idea. I feel like if he was, he’d have said something about the prayer, but he doesn’t.

“I’m so sorry,” I say.

“You were the one who stabbed me? How rude. You could have just told me you didn’t want tacos tonight,” Landon teases.

“You know what I mean.”

“I don’t. Not at all. You’re apologizing for what exactly? You didn’t do anything to me.”

I squeeze his hand and kiss the back of it. “You wouldn’t have been in this position if it wasn’t for me.”

“I’d still probably be conned into robbing banks if it wasn’t for you. And that can’t be the safest of things to do.”

I give his hand another kiss. “You know what I mean.”

“I don’t.”

“You do.”

“No, I don’t. Stop this, August. You can’t put me in a safe room and forbid me from living life any more than I can do it to you,” he says. “Every day that you go out and help people I’m worried something will happen to you which is, one hundred percent, the only reason I go help. I’m going to be honest… I’m not into the whole hero thing. I don’t go out there for them, I go out there for you. So I know that I’m just as bad, but at the end of the day, we’ve both made it to nearly thirty on our own. Imagine how much further we can make it together? We’ll be like fucking a hundred and twelve, and I’ll be like pushing little kids over with my telekinesis and stuff. That sounds fun.”

I can’t help but grin at him. “I guess… I guess that does sound fun.”

“And you can freeze time and trip them without being caught.”

“I love it.”

Landon smiles at me. “I thought you would.”

The door opens and Valerie bustles in.

“Oh god,” Landon declares quite loudly.

“I’m glad to see you’re back to normal.”

“I’m so sorry for telling you that you looked pretty. And that… and that… what you did… was… was hot,” Landon says, looking more pained than when he’d been stabbed.

Valerie looks relieved. “I’m glad to have you back, Landon.”

“Thanks.”

“We’ve determined that we’re going to send him to headquarters where he’ll be safest,” she says. I can immediately see the reluctance in Landon’s face.

“What? Nooo… Valerie, don’t do this to me. Don’t torture me this way. Why do you hate me?”

“If I hated you, I wouldn’t have all of this protection for you. I would have had them drop you off at the hospital with the highest mortality rate.”

Landon looks toward me like he thinks I can bully her into listening. Honestly… for right now, I’m fine with it. I don’t like the idea that something could happen to him, and realistically, he’ll be safer there.
