“Hurricane at least.”

“Right. Right,” he says as he pedals a bit to get us turned around. “Ready?”

“Yep,”I say as I keep my feet firmly on the ground and use the power of my brain instead. Just… simply push the pedals a little bit with my telekinesis which will require no physical energy and should get us across the pond in no time.

The pedal moves and I give August a sly look. “Eh?” I’m quite proud of myself for this.

“You can make it rotate?” he asks.

I turn my attention back to it and push again. It does make it harder, though, because I either have to shift my focus from pedal to pedal to keep pushing it forward or do a push and then pull motion. Suddenly, I’m glaring at the fucker that’s taking far too much concentration before shoving it so hard I hear apop.

“What was that?” August asks as he leans over to look at where I’ve shoved one of my pedalsthroughthe boat. Just a tiny bit. Like…barelynoticeably bit with all the water rushing in.

“Nothing,” I say as I cup my hand over his eyes. “Don’t worry about it, just keep pedaling.”

“Well… I’m kind of worried about it because I can suddenly feel water on my toes.”

“Yeah, well Zacia had to pee. Do you blame her? All the running water makes a girl have to pee.” I refuse to remove my hand from his eyes as I reach down and try to pull the pedaloutof the crack in the boat because there’s absolutelynoway to pedal without them.

“It’s weird, I feel water on my ankles.”

“Clearly, you’re imagining things, August. Maybe you’re still sleeping,” I say as I grab the basket he brought and tuck the book safely in my shirt. Then I try to start scooping water out with the basket, but this requires me to unclamp my hands over August’s eyes.

“Huh,” he says as he looks down.

“August, why did you break the boat?”

He raises an eyebrow. “Ibroke the boat?”

“I saw you kick it! You don’t have to be so angry about not wanting to pedal anymore!”

“Does your pedal still work? We’re going to have to pedal fast to make it to the edge before it sinks,” he says as he reaches down and grabs my pedal that’s rammed into the bottom. He tugs but it stays quite tight, so he has nothing left to do but use his superhuman strength, popping it out with beautiful ease and causing his side to bust right through the bottom.

“August… why’d you punch another hole in the boat?” I ask.

“Okay, I do admit this time I did it, but the other one was fully your fault!”

“August, I think this is the end. Our romance was still a bright flame flickering hard, but now it’s about to be snuffed.”

“We’re not going todie,” he says as he starts using his hands to scoop out water. It’s wildly ineffective. “Oh! Can you use your power to hold something against the holes?”

“The flame lives! August, you’re brilliant,” I say as I flatten the pop cans and press each of them down against the holes. It’s not perfect, but it is slowing the flow of water. The issue is the water is fighting against them, so I have to keep a steady force against it as I remain focused.

“Now… would it be too much to ask if you could use your telekinesis to just… push us over to the shore?”

“It… it gets awkward when I’m in something,” I admit. “Just like how I can’t really pick myself up. If I could, I’d be like Aladdin, lounging around on a dirty rug floating above the city while reading books every time I want to avoid Valerie.”

“Okay. Well, now that the pedals are free, I think I can use them. I’ll sit in the middle so you can stay focused on plugging the holes. It’ll take a little longer, but I’ll pedal us to the other side.”

“Perfect!” I say with so much enthusiasm I ram both cans right through the holes in the bottom of the boat, busting the holes open even wider. “August, how dare you!”

“I wasn’t eventouchingthem that time!”

“Yes, but my love for you burst out of my body so fucking hard I just shattered the boat! How dare you be so loveable?”

“I… I don’t know!” he says as the water steadily begins to consume the boat. Zacia, who’d been on my lap, looks disgusted when the water touches her paw. She holds one paw up while giving a very dissatisfied meow. I grab her and put her on my shoulders as I turn to August.

“My love for you has gone from a flame to a raging fire. I know our love has been short, but it was hot. And my dying wish as I sink to the depths of the unknown is for you to save Zacia… and my book.” I hold them both out to him.
