The happiness on his face makes this day absolutely perfect. He hands me a wrap that does say “Landon” on it but instead of the hearts I was promised, Valerie wrote “Don’t be a little bitch” as some kind of threat.

I love it all the same. “I know I’ve said this before, but Valerie would make a really good supervillain.”

“I’ll make sure to let her know,” he says as he cracks open a pop and hands it to me.

“Do you think the person who did that illusion or whatever it was to me… really just wanted to get me out of the picture?” I ask. “Or do you think they wanted me to kill Hannah?”

“I don’t know,” August admits as he hesitates. “Hannah sure has acquired some people who absolutely despise her. They could have known you’d have the means for it, or they could have wanted to make you look bad. I’m not sure.”

“Okay… let’s think about something else instead. This talk is stupid.”

“I agree. We can talk about your leg power. Wow, you’re going to have legs of steel after this.”

“Are you… making fun of me because I feel like you are.”

August gives me a perfectly innocent look. “I would never.”

“I love you, August. Please don’t make me turn that to past tense.”

He laughs as he leans back. “I won’t. Oh, I heard from Lex the other day. He was wondering what he should get you for your birthday.”

“What?”

“Like what kind of present.”

I shake my head. “He doesn’t need to get me anything.”

“What does your family generally do? Rob a bank? Ransack a store? Torture old ladies?”

“All at once, actually. Generally, we torture the old lady by making her ransack the storewhilewe rob the bank. Nah, we usually don’t do much, but my mom was saying something weird about ‘making it up to me.’ When I heard it, I got this awful feeling in my stomach… like someone had torn a hole into my abdomen and was crushing my insides with the power of their hands, and I told her that I would rather jump into a shark tank. So now she thinks I want to free the sharks.”

“Your family… they just jump for it. Like not even with their legs but their whole body.”

“Uh-huh. Every part but their brain, and then they miss the target and end up so far on the other side that absolutely no one has any idea of what they were jumping for in the first place. And don’t forget we have a SAVCGEM meeting on Thursday.”

“Oh… we’re going? I thought you hated those things.”

“Of course we’re going. I can both hate and love something, August. Don’t restrict me so early in our relationship. That should at least wait for marriage.”

August just shakes his head. Zacia finally looks away from the water long enough to notice we’re eating and hurries on over to see what goodies we have and how much she can con us into giving her.

“Zacia wants a piece of your rollup.”

“Okay,” he says, like he’s uncertain why I wouldn’t give her a piece of mine. I kind of thought it was obvious.

“If Valerie poisoned mine, like we’re pretty sure she did, I don’t want my cat going to the underworld with me,” I explain as he gives Zacia a piece.

That makes August laugh. “She isn’t planning on murdering you!” he assures me. “Probably.”

“Uh-huh,” I say as I finish my lunch.

August shifts and lays his legs across mine so he can look at me better.

I smile at him as the wind blows his hair a little bit and the sun warms me up from where it’s hitting. “This is really nice.”

“It is. Do you want to go camping sometime?” he asks.

“Like… with bugs and stuff?” I ask, quite unsure of what he’s referring to.
