Deus’s eyes snap over to him. “That is so kind of you.”

Ellison just grunts and looks away while blushing. Of course Deus the Dense doesn’t notice this.

“We couldn’t find any hair for the head since Lex wouldn’t let us cut off any hair from his dog and Ellison said he didn’t have any down-there hair to spare, so we made do.”

Deus finds me hilarious while absolutely no one else does, but that’s fine. As long as the injured one enjoys it, I don’t care if the rest of my crowd doesn’t understand the fine art of comedy. Or… maybe it should worry me that only Deus finds it funny.

Dammit.

Once the paperwork is finally through, we head out to the car which August drives home as we fill Deus in on what we’d learned earlier today.

“So obviously we couldn’t keep what happened quiet,” August says. “While I feel deep regret for the pain the families went through, what they did left more dead in their wake. Alloy killed five people before he was stopped this time and put many more into intensive care. Dave ended up turning himself in before I could get myself to… tell Valerie what he’d done. I don’t know yet what they’ll do with him. He has a case against Superheroes United but honestly, we all know that case won’t stand. It doesn’t matter what they did, they won’t be punished for it… so maybe they’ll throw his case away to keep quiet. Or maybe they’ll pay him off again, since that worked so well last time.”

“Honestly, it’s anyone’s guess,” Ellison says. “So far they’ve kept it out of the public for this very reason.”

“Right,” I say. “None of this is right from either side, but sadly, there’s not much we can do about it. At the end of the day, it is what it is. Innocent people died which led to more innocents dying.”

“But I do think the city could learn from this,” Ellison says.

August nods. “I really hope.”

When we reach my house where we’re still all staying, I insist on August helping Deus out of the car even though Deus is positive he’s perfectly fine as we guide him over to the couch. As we leave Lex and Ellison to deal with making him comfortable, I head into the kitchen.

“You doing alright?” August asks.

“I’m fine. You?” I ask as he loops an arm around me and pulls me toward him. I lean against him and close my eyes, loving the way I can just press myself into his strong arms.

“I’m good. You don’t know the relief I feel when something stressful happens and I have you by my side,” he says. “I used to go home alone and yes, I still had my parents, but I was always reluctant to show them how much this job affects me. But now I have you.”

“You do. And you’re gonna use me as a threat now to keep anyone from fucking with you. ‘Oh, wanna rob a bank? Then I guess you want to see my sexy babe rip your head off with a flick of his hand.’”

“And they’ll look over and you’ll just be sitting there reading a book.”

I grin at him. “It’s even more threatening that way.”

“Oh, of course! Silly me.”

I drape my arms around his neck before leaning in to kiss him. “You never have to do any of this alone. You are surrounded by people capable of helping you now. If there’s a good part in my book and I just can’t be bothered to put it down, you still have Deus and Lex and Ellison.”

“Don’t forget Zacia.”

“Oh, I could never forget my Balzac.”

August grins.

“So… did you give them a final answer if you’re staying as the city’s hero?”

“I told them that I would stay as long as I see true improvements, but the moment I don’t, I’m done for real,” he says.

“That’s my sexy man. Did you threaten them like I told you to?”

August raises an eyebrow before giving me a grin. “I… I did.”

“Ooh! Tell me!”

“I told them that I had a list of rules.”

“Hit me.”
