He literally would have cut Brandon’s head clean off at the insanespeedhe did that if Brandon weren’t invincible. Even Brandon seems to realize how serious this is as he scrambles up to his feet. Instead of running backwardslike he was told,Brandon glances back at me and then rushes for Alloy. He’s trying to protect me, but right now I need him to help me. He’s not going to be able to do this alone.

The man is ruthless as he pelts Brandon with hit after hit until I realize that he’s using the metal to encase Brandon like a box wrapping around him. Brandon beats against it, but he can’t seem to get through it.

“Well, that… could have gone better,” Lex says.

“You’re telling me,” I mutter.

“It at least gave us a good idea of his power to see it in person,” Ellison says. “Now… are you guys ready?”

“Yes,” I say as I look over at August and Lex who both look less than ready. I reach over and squeeze August’s hand. “It’s going to be okay.”

August doesn’t seem so sure, but he gives me a nod. “I can’t lose you.”

“You won’t,” I promise.

Ellison the Second appears before Alloy, drawing his attention to him. When Ellison’s illusion pulls back to avoid the hit, Alloy follows him away from the front of the building. Finally seeing us, the man starts making his way closer. The moment he sees August, a grin forms on his face and he ignores Ellison’s illusion as he rushes straight for him. He throws his hand forward and with it comes the smallest screw that I nearly miss. Somehow I see it just in time to catch it and fling it back at him with as much speed and precision as he had. He’s startled enough that he slows to acknowledge me as he stops the screw from hitting him.

“Oh? I see you’ve brought friends this time,” Alloy says, looking thrilled at the idea which is quite worrisome. “You can watch them die as well.”

“Fuck you,” August says. “I didn’t take that woman and she’s still alive. It was set up by the families of your past victims, but I’m actually glad because I can keep you from doing this shit ever again.”

Alloy grins at him. “I’m just glad the man you love is here so you can watch him die,” he says as he throws a thin piece of metal at me with so much speed, I have to use my power to smack it out of the way. Quickly, I grab a rock with my mind and hurl it at him with enough speed that it’d be like shooting him. He holds up his hand and a metal sheet stops the incoming projectile. I reach out and grab onto the man, planning on flinging him off to the fucking moon, but he seems so damn attached to the metal protecting him that I can’t even move him. He feels heavier than a damn building because of the way he’s attaching himself to the earth, and the barrier he’s created keeps me from touching him.

He smirks when he sees that I’m not getting quite as far as I’d hoped. Sliding his arm out toward me, Alloy causes metal to come flying at all of us from different directions. I throw my hands up, catching the pieces a moment before Lex falls back, and I realize that I’d let a tiny piece that I hadn’t evenseenslip by.

“Lex!” I yell as Lex cups his arm, but he’s still on his feet at least.

“Stay focused!” Ellison yells as fifteen of him appear before Alloy, grabbing and reaching for him. Alloy tries throwing a few back before he seems to realize that he can’t touch them. It doesn’t matter because they’re obstructing his vision and distracting him enough that I reach out to August.

“Now!” I say.

August moves toward me but before he can reach me, Alloy divides us by throwing the car we’d driven here between us. His reach is clearly farther than we ever imagined as he forces us apart. I throw my hands up to stop the oncoming vehicle that’s careening toward me as August rushes after the man, probably planning on distracting him.

I manage to halt the vehicle and throw it far enough away that I hope he can’t grab it again. That’s when I notice August has moved ahead of me in his attempt to get away from the onslaught of attacks. He needs to come back for me, but would it take too long to reach me and then take me up to him when he’s nearly to Alloy himself? August glances back at me. “I can’t let you die. He’s not distracted enough to move you in yet,” he says, and then he’s gone.

“FUCK,” I yell as August appears before Alloy and punches him right in the face, sending him reeling back. Alloy looks startled and roars as he holds an iron rod like a bat and swings it at August. August dodges it with ease and drives into the man. He keeps freezing time, but something Alloy is doing must be stopping him from making contact when time is frozen.

I rush toward them, needing to get close as Alloy swings the rod toward August’s head with enough force he could kill him if he makes contact. I tear it out of his grasp with my power, letting it slide back to my hands a moment before he manages to throw August back with his weight alone.

Alloy lets out a scream and I lift my hands up to protect those around me from the rain of shit he’s showering on us. It’s like it doesn’t matter that we’ve pulled him out here, he’s just going to rip out all of the metal from the headquarters building. He keeps trying to draw us back toward it, but we can’t let him get too close or he’ll have even more ammunition to use against us.

Suddenly, the ground begins to shake, and something buckles under my feet which makes me stumble, startling me. I fall forward as something heavy grabs onto me,tearingme down to my knees.

As I crash to the ground, I realize that he’s led us over to where there are metal pipes beneath the earth, using them to drag me down because if he stops me, he’ll have more time to wound the others. I’m flung onto the ground as a pipe throws me back, smashing into me. Pain tears into my back, but I quickly fling it off my body as I roll onto my hands and knees. That’s when I see a sheet of metal fly right for Ellison.

Quickly, I reach out to grab it, but I know it’s too late. I can’t grab it fast enough, but before it hits him, it slams to a stop, barely aided by my power.

Ellison looks at it in shock a moment before I see him reach forward as Deus becomes visible. He staggers as Ellison desperately grabs onto him, and I realize that Alloy didn’t stop the metal before it hit Ellison, Deus did.

Blood begins to run down his back as he staggers into Ellison.

“Fuck, fuck,” I whisper, knowing that I need to do something. I need to stop Alloy before he hurts or kills anyone else.

“Why did you do that?” Ellison says, looking shocked. “Asmodeus…” He grips tightly onto Deus who doesn’t seem to be able to stay on his feet.

Deus fights to stay up, grasping tightly onto Ellison or else I’m sure he’d fall. “I’m fine.”

This isn’t fine. None of this is fine. The people I’m caring about are getting hurt and I can’t stop it.
