I smoothed her hair. “I think I need a break before we go any further, babe.”

“We can take it a little at a time, ya know? I can’t imagine what it’s like for you.”

I sucked in a deep breath, grateful for the break. “Why don’t we get out of here?”

She looked up at me and smiled. “Where are we going?”

“Let me make a phone call. Why don’t you get ready. Do whatever you normally do when you’re in public.”

She laughed, then pulled away. “What are you up to, Kane Cooper?”

God, she’s beautiful. “Guess you’ll have to find out.” I gave her a cocky grin before I stepped out of the room and made my call.

Brie turned in the passenger’s seat, glowering at me. “What do you mean you haven’t ever done this before?” She folded her arms over her chest, pushing up her breasts.

“You can’t bribe me with your gorgeous tits, babe. I won’t say another word.” I flipped on my signal and turned onto a back road. We weren’t that far from the school, but the city wasn’t big.

“Far, Far Too Long” by Alexander Nate played through the stereo while my girlfriend pouted. I didn’t miss her fingers tapping to the beat, though.

I slowed, then pulled onto a long driveway that wound up a hill.

“Holy shit.” She leaned forward. “It’s beautiful.”

“The colonial house was built in the early nineteen hundreds. It’s one of the tucked-away historical homes in Oregon. Everything has been restored, but the columns and other architectural features are original.” I parked the car in front of the four-car garage and turned off the engine. Freshly trimmed shrubs lined the walkway, and the bright green set off the grey shutters around the windows.

Brie’s face lit up, sending my pulse thundering into overdrive. That’s what I needed, to see her happy. I hopped out, hurried to her side, and opened the passenger’s door. Holding out my hand, I waited for her to grab her purse, then she placed her palm in mine.

“So, you know this property pretty well. I mean, we have permission to be here, right?” She stopped in her tracks, covering her mouth, then pointing above us. “Oh my God. I love the balcony. Is it off the master bedroom?”

“It is.”

She spun on her heel, her childlike excitement contagious. “Are we able to see it?”

“I arranged a tour of the house.”

She bounced on the balls of her feet, then threw her arms around my neck. “Thank you. This is perfect.”

I laughed, then laced my fingers through hers. Approaching the manor, I rapped my knuckles on the mahogany door, and it swung open. A beautiful woman greeted us with a wide smile. Her hand fluttered over her heart as her eyes landed on Brie.

Brie’s mouth gaped, then she looked at me, confusion etched in her features.

“Mrs. Cooper?”

“Welcome, Brie. It’s so nice to see you again. Please, come in.” Mom glanced at mine and Brie’s joined fingers, then winked at me as we entered.

“This is your home?” Brie asked me.

“Well, it’s my parents’.” I rubbed her back, her expression registering that I’d brought her to my family’s place. Since she’d already met Mom, and they’d hit it off, I thought it would make Brie feel more comfortable.

“Kane called and asked if you two could join us for dinner.”

“Oh, that sounds wonderful.” Brie smiled. “I wanted to thank you again for your help with the alarm system. I haven’t had any more problems.” Brie squeezed my hand, hard.

“I’m so relieved. I was ready to pack you up and move you in with us.” Mom smoothed her emerald-green blouse, her blue eyes filling with a protectiveness for Brie.

Even though I was close to my parents, I hadn’t talked to them about how I knew my girlfriend. Not yet.
