I locked up and armed the alarm system, relieved that I had it since Marc was still in town.

“Dammit. I was supposed to tell him …” I released a string of swear words, frustration and anger ripping through me. The entire day had been a complete shit show. First, the crap with Marc, then Arianna stopped by to check on me. She had no idea how much I appreciated her, but it had completely taken me by surprise. Hell, I’d just worked up my nerve to talk to Kane.

“Fuck you, Marc. I refuse to be controlled again.” I groaned and balled my fists. It was only nine in the evening, but I had to focus on something other than what had unfolded earlier. It was eleven in Tennessee, so I couldn’t call my parents to say hi either. My coursework was all caught up, which left television.

My stomach flip-flopped as my thoughts returned to Kane. Somehow, I had to make things up to him. I began considering how to fix the mess I’d helped make while I cuffed myself to the bed, then turned on Bridgerton.

After several attempts to pay attention to the show, I uncuffed myself, then messaged Gabby.

Sup?

Almost immediately, the little grey dots bounced up and down.

I’m bored. There’s not even any good porn on. LOL.

I snickered. She should try the society. It was way better than porn. My fingers flew across the keyboard, smiling.

Do you want to come over? Bring your bag in case you want to crash here.

Seconds later, she replied.

Hell yeah. See you in twenty, bitch.

I hopped out of bed, hoping I had enough snacks and soda. After a quick perusal, I texted her again.

I have no alcohol. Can you buy some, and I’ll pay you back?

A huge grin eased across my face as I read her response.

We have plenty here. I’ll bring some ciders and rum. Got Coke?

I stared in my fridge, then updated her.

Yup, and Dr. Pepper, chips, salsa, … oh, we can make nachos!

I feel like you’re planning for the munchies, not drinking. LOL.

Whatevs. Get your cute little ass over here.I laughed, throwing her words back at her.

“Why haven’t I indulged more? It takes off the edge.” I took a sip of the drink that Gabby had so expertly made.

“I have no idea. As you could tell from all the liquor at the house, we girls drink. But, when everyone’s boyfriend or date is over, then it’s just a party. You should join us sometime. You can crash in my room.” She folded her legs beneath her, then rubbed a palm on her thigh. Her navy sweater looked warm and comfy. I made a mental note to go shopping for warmer clothes other than the few sweaters I owned. My wardrobe was made for Tennessee winters, not Oregon’s.

“It would be fun.” I tucked my leg beneath me, shifting on the couch. “Are you seeing anyone? I’ve not asked before.” I frowned, wondering if I was nosy or a bad friend.

Gabby sighed. “No. Ari and Teagan are in serious relationships, but I’ve not found my person. You?”

I snorted. “Girl, I haven’t told you about the shit that’s going down. If this is my life, I’ll never date!”

Gabby’s mouth dropped open. “You’re holding out on me? That’s completely unacceptable.” She waved her hand in the air, emphasizing her point. “Spill. The. Deets. Now.” She gave me a pointed look.

I took another drink, enjoying the fact that my body was finally relaxing after such a stressful day. “Marc, my ex, is in town.”

“What?” Gabby jerked her arm, her rum and Coke splashing over the rim and onto her navy yoga pants.

I hopped up, collected a hand towel from the kitchen, and gave it to her.
