“Marc, stop. I don’t want you here. Go home. Live your life and leave mine alone.” She stomped on his foot, then jerked her arm away. Brie marched off toward her car, frustrated.

I snickered. At least she held her ground.

Marc jogged after her, then slid his arm around her waist. The son of a bitch wasn’t taking no for an answer very well. Brie elbowed him in the side, almost doubling Marc over. The moment she reached her car, he slammed her against the driver’s door. He sneered at her, then tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. He whispered something, and the color drained from her face. Marc placed a forceful kiss on her mouth, and I fucking came unglued. Brie attempted to shove him away, but he’d pinned her with his body, and she couldn’t move.

My nostrils flared. It was one thing for me to screw with her, but this guy needed to back the fuck up. Before I realized what was happening, my feet carried me across the parking lot to where Marc and Brie were. Somewhere inside me, a switch flipped, and everything that Brie had done to me faded momentarily into the background.

“Is there a problem, Brie?” I asked, my tone carrying a warning.

“Who are you?” Marc turned to me. He straightened his shoulders, and I could almost see the peacock feathers fanning out. His light brown eyes were trained on me, assessing the situation. Marc was short and stocky, but he wasn’t a match for me, but only one of us knew that.

“A friend. Who are you?” I resisted the urge to punch him in his fucking nose.

“Her boyfriend, so you need to step off, motherfucker.” He quirked a confrontational brow at me.

“Not from what I can see. Brie?” I looked around Marc at her. “Is he with you?”

“No. Marc isn’t anyone that I want to talk to.” She’d taken advantage of me showing up and moved away from the car and us.

Good girl.“You heard her,Marc.” My fist clenched and unclenched. I was itching to hit this asshole, but I had to protect my hands at the same time.

Marc closed the gap between us, then poked me in the chest. “I’m here now, so you need to step off. Brie and I have been together for a few years. Much longer than she’s known you.”

I slapped his hand away. “Is that so?” I leaned down, a shit-eating grin slipping into place. “If she’s yours, why did she fuck someone else Sunday afternoon?” I whispered, glancing at Brie, but she hadn’t heard me. Marc’s fist flew toward my face, and I jerked back in time. Catching him entirely off guard, I grabbed his wrist, stopping his throw mid-air. “I would highly recommend that you leave. This is your only warning,” I growled, before shoving him backward.Brie is mine.Startled by the intrusive thought, I pushed it out of my head. I had to stay focused.

Marc’s cheeks turned bright red as he stumbled, nearly landing on his ass. As I had expected, he came at me again, but this time, I let loose. Jagger would have been proud as I landed two hits to Marc’s gut. As he doubled over, my fist connected with his jaw. Before the fight had even started, I’d finished it. He was now moaning like a little bitch on the ground.

“Shit. Kane, are you okay?” Brie ran over to me, taking my hand in hers and inspecting it. “You should get some ice on that right away.” She glanced up, our eyes connecting. “We should probably talk,” she said softly. “Why don’t you come over? Give me an hour.”

There it was. I figured she’d finally put together who I was by her expression. The shit was about to get real.

“Get in your car, and I’ll stay here to make sure Marc doesn’t follow you home.” Wasn’t I the nice guy? Little did she know that I’d been following her and had been in her house while she was asleep.

“Thank you.” She hurried to her Lexus, climbed in, and locked the doors.

Good girl.At least she had enough sense to make sure he didn’t climb in the damn car with her.

As she pulled away, my gaze landed on Marc again. “Where are you from?” I kept my distance in case he wanted to grab my ankle and jerk my leg out from underneath me.

“Tennessee. Brie and I went to high school together. Man, you don’t want her. She’s a fucking mental mess.” He rolled over to his hands and knees, slowly picking himself up off the ground.

“Why is that?” My curiosity was getting the better of me now. Maybe he would unknowingly offer up a bit of information about her.

Marc flashed me a cocky grin. “She’s a great fuck. It’s the only reason I keep her around.”

Careful. I’m about to put you in the hospital for saying that shit about her.I had to get ahold of myself, and quickly. Brie was the enemy.Tell your heart that.

“So, you came all the way from Tennessee to fuck her? You’re a desperate little shit.” I chuckled, thoroughly enjoying myself. “Why are you really here?”

Marc held his side, attempting to straighten. He grimaced, then briefly stared at his feet before he charged at me.

His head hit my stomach full force, knocking me down. The air whooshed from my lungs as my back landed on the asphalt. Marc straddled me, then threw a punch into my face. Red and black dots began to fill my vision, and I rapidly blinked as I managed to block his next hit. I bucked my hips off the ground, throwing Marc off-balance. It was all I needed to regain the advantage, but he’d fucked up. Memories of being held down and beaten bombarded my thoughts as I began to slip away from reality.

“Where is she, boy?” Elder Jasper said, kicking me in the side with his booted foot. “I know that you helped Lyndsay escape. Where is she?”

I curled into a ball and covered my head with my arms as the hits kept coming. Squeezing my eyes closed, I did my best to focus on football plays, but it was no use. The pain was too intense.

A strong hand jerked me backward, reality flickering in and out. I scrambled to stand, my breathing ragged.
