“Alice, I know that our relationship started out a little rocky. I was stupid, not seeing what was right in front of my eyes, but you were patient. You love my daughter, and that means the world to me. You gave me a kick when I needed it, and I’m so thankful for that because everything that has happened has led to this moment right here with me kneeling in front of you, our daughter holding on to the chicken-and-waffle bandit.”
Alice laughs, slightly hiccuping while tears stream down her face, which she can’t wipe away because I have both of her hands. I reach up with mine, chasing the trails away with one finger and letting my hand linger on her skin for a moment.
“We love you. I love you. And I don’t want to go another moment without you promising us forever because I’m greedy like that.” I smile at her, and she beams back at me.
I turn slightly, nodding to Ivy, and she reaches to place her hand underneath Waffle’s mouth.
“Give it to me, Waffle,” she whispers.
We watch the dog drop the ring box he was holding into her tiny hand. She places the slobbery mess in mine, and I wrinkle my nose slightly. I could’ve thought that through a little better.
“Alice,” I say, opening the box, the single solitaire diamond in a rose-gold band catching the sunlight and glittering. “Will you be my wife and Ivy’s mother?”
Waffle chooses that moment to bark, and I chuckle.
“And Waffle’s dog mom?”
Waffle nods, as if agreeing.
“I will! I do! Yes, yes, yes!” Alice says, leaning forward and grabbing us all in a large hug.
Ivy is screeching, and I hear a smattering of applause from the crowd that has apparently gathered around us. Waffle wiggles out of our tight embrace and runs circles around the bench, barking before I see my dad grab his leash.
I’m sandwiched between the two girls I love the most.
There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.
My heart is full.
