Finally, someone picked up. “Road Monsters MC,” a gruff voice answered.

Hell, after the cryptic shit I went through this morning that threw me for a fucking loop.

I took a deep breath. “Hear you want to buy a Harley. A real nice one.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line. After a moment, the voice spoke again. He cleared his throat first. “Okay. I’ll make the arrangements. But you’ll owe me a favor.”

“I understand,” I said and hung up the phone.

Almost instantly, I got another text on my burner about the location of a motorcycle shop. That was quick. But then the phone sounded again. No, my other one. Payday flashed on the screen.

We need to talk.

Then another number flashed, an unknown one. I checked it and read that text.

I’m still waiting, Levi. FYI, I sent Payday to help you bring her in.

It was Kingpin from another phone, since I blocked his actual number.

Fuck. I instantly slipped that phone into the trash can.

Maren and I mounted our bikes and again, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease. Maybe it was just the three cups of coffee I had, knowing I needed to be alert. The fact we had an actual plan and resources encouraged me, but so much could go wrong. We needed money to start over, and the only way to get it was to sell this beast.

We found the motorcycle shop from the text easily since it was located only in another town over. Looking to the sky, I wondered if the Road Monsters MC was tracking me somehow. I patted my jacket, suspecting Merc had slipped in a tracking device. They had all kinds of shit that did that now. My cut was in a saddlebag. I couldn’t leave it behind, but now I thought better. Maybe Kingpin had something in there so he could find me. He did have a new tech guy.

It wasn’t lost on me that the texts I just received made it appear like Payday hadn’t been coming to kill me. Maybe I overreacted by calling and pledging myself to a gang of nomads I didn’t know much about. But there was no room or time for second guessing now. It would be no use. I couldn’t just call and say I took it all back. At the very least, my old club wanted Maren brought to them all the same. I tried to feel resolved, happy with my decision to go to the Road Monsters MC for help but found it impossible. My loyalties wouldn’t change in an instant. Maybe that was why this new club was waiting to patch me in.

Parking my bike outside a small, local shop, I noticed the pawn sign and the used motorcycles. A pang of sadness hit me as I cut the engine, knowing I had to let it go. But it was worth it to have the means to run away with the woman I loved. To keep my kids safe. To start anew, my loyalty now sold to another motorcycle gang.

Before we stepped inside, Maren gave me a look that said she didn’t trust any of this. Taking her hand, I pulled her to me.

“It’s okay. I know these guys,” I lied too easily.

Fuck. I didn’t want to, but I was sworn to secrecy.

Inside, we talked to the shop owner, who said he was willing to buy my bike. Old friend, he called me, selling my lie. He joined Maren and me outside, where we circled it. We haggled for a while but eventually agreed on a price, not nearly as much as I wanted. But I needed it in cash. The biker had it ready, and we stuffed it Maren’s backpack.

Maren, I walked out of the shop, and I handed her the pack. It was a lot of money, but we would need every penny to survive on the run. She put it on her back.

“This was way too easy,” she remarked. “The guy had thirty-five grand in cash. Is this bike even worth that?”

“I paid a lot more for it.”

“You don’t think that this smells? Maybe he’s setting us up.”

Maren was rightfully suspicious because she didn’t know the particulars. I couldn’t tell her about the Road Monsters MC.

After we transferred everything out of my beloved hog, we got on her motorcycle. I rode away, leaving my old life behind. Yes, I left my cut, the one that proclaimed I was the Enforcer for the Royal Bastards MC in Nashville, TN in the saddlebag. It was a scary feeling, but also exhilarating. Treasure and Monster were on the run, but we were together. That was all that mattered.

Chapter 14

Monster

With Maren at my back, I felt much better as I took the back roads through Louisiana. As it got closer to evening, when we stopped, I suggested we get to the highway and find a hotel for the night. Maren agreed. She asked for my phone to look up a place since she left hers behind. I revealed I threw it out.

“We’ll have to do it the old-fashioned way,” I said.

We found a decent place to stay and went to the counter. I made sure to use the credit card of my alias to get the room.
