“It won’t matter where we go as long as I’m with you and my girls are safe.” Levi kissed my shoulder from behind. “And you and this baby.”

I was more than thrilled there was no conversation on whether it mattered if he was the dad or not. It didn’t matter to me. We’d find out soon enough, I was sure, on account of Ax being fully Cuban.

When I was a teen, I had not been given any options. I had to give my baby up. Once she was born, I hadn’t wanted to put her up for adoption. No matter who the father was. I tried to kidnap her, take her away from her adoptive parents, who quickly turned into just a single mom.

Being an adult faced with an unplanned pregnancy, I weighed my options, but I had been up in the air about it before Levi said we would go somewhere safe. I didn’t want to bring a child into the biker world. With all the challenges we faced, I felt good about running away with Levi.

I felt like a million bucks when we climbed into bed, sated and clean. Resting my head on the biker like I had so many times before, I found peace and slumber.

When I opened my eyes the next morning, I was in for a shock.

Chapter 12

Leviathan

“Breakfast?” Maren asked, opening her eyes.

Inhaling, I bet she could smell the coffee that permeated the small room. I was on my second cup. I needed a third.

Not only had I gotten her favorites, a bagel with cream cheese and strawberries with a spinach and cheese omelet with orange juice from the diner next door, I grabbed two plastic chairs and a table from the abandoned pool out front and cleaned them off enough so we could sit. After all, we couldn’t go out and be seen.

What was more, before I went to the diner, I made a trip to her house and packed for her. I got everything I could fit in my saddlebags, clothes and any personal effects, her jewelry, and weapons. Going early enough, I worked quickly enough not to be seen. We would have to go back for anything else I couldn’t grab. Having let Maren sleep in, I had it all waiting for her.

“Eat up. We need to get going.”

“You have my clothes?”

I told her about my adventures this morning, along with the disturbing fact that led to them.

“I was on empty from our trip yesterday. Rather than stopping in this town with you on the back of my Harley to gas up, I decided to go before first light. Once I filled my tank, I saw one of my brothers. One lone biker.”

“Can you be sure?”

“Like me, this guy is unmistakable. Plus, I saw his cut. I wasn’t wearing mine, but I’m sure he spotted me, too. So, I lost him. I think. Instead of leading him back here, I took the opportunity to go pack your things. And I came the long way back, hoping to throw him off our trail. We have to leave soon.”

Fucking Payday, I swear it was him. He was just the brother Kingpin would send after me. No one would miss the bastard if he were gone, either. One of our secretaries, he was a bitter asshole who irked everyone. The only reason we tolerated him was because of his bookend, his buddy, our brother, Cousin was so damn sweet, he balanced the fucker out. Payday shacked up with his girl in downtown Nashville and had been gone so long. He was barely around the clubhouse anymore.

Payday wasn’t a big biker like me. He was so thin you noticed, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t take me out. He was a sharpshooter, one of the best in the country. Did Kingpin mean for him to snipe me and take off with Maren?

“I don’t suppose you took my keys?” she asked.

“No. I broke in. It’ll be better that way. My brothers will think I took you if they go snooping around. Your club won’t suspect you ran. They’ll think you were taken.”

Nodding, Maren went to the bathroom to dress. She came out and gulped her meal, leaving half of it unfinished.

We were both on edge.

“I guess I should leave my cut here?” she asked.

“Yes,” I said, just deciding.

“What about my Harley?” she asked next, her hands shaky.

I thought about it before asking, “Do you think you can ride out of Texas?”

“I’m pregnant, not disabled,” she replied with a smirk though she was still visibly nervous.

“It’s a long ride to where we’re going.”
