Leigh and Jake sat in the back of the car together with Morgan in the front with the driver on the way to the event.

“What do you think triggered this? Was there anything in particular you were doing just before the threats started?”

Morgan thought of Renee, who had been a fairly recent development in her life. Of course, she couldn’t tell Morgan about Renee. Besides, it wasn’t like that was relevant. Renee was hardly the type to send death threats.

“Nothing.”

Morgan frowned. “You know, I can tell when someone is holding something back. It’s all about reading body language. A lifetime of studying martial arts has given me a pretty good idea of body language.”

“Are you accusing me of lying?”

“Do I need to be?”

“How dare you!” Leigh held onto her fake outrage, because it was all that kept her from shriveling in embarrassment. She’d barely known Morgan an hour and already Morgan was on to her deception. This was going to be difficult. Maybe she had been right from the start. Perhaps she and Jake should just take their chances waiting for the police to come up with something.

Morgan turned her body and looked back at Leigh in the backseat. Leigh, again was struck by just how lovely Morgan’s face was and how intense her green eyes were. “Calm down, Leigh. I realize that you don’t know or trust me yet, but I’m only trying to help you. I can’t do that if you’re not entirely honest with me.”

“Iambeing entirely honest with you,” Leigh insisted through gritted teeth.”

Morgan held her challenging gaze for a few moments before nodding. “Alright, Leigh. Alright.”

Leigh got the distinct impression that Morgan didn’t believe her and was only choosing not to pry for now.

She would have to worry about that another time. For now, Leigh did her best to focus on the charity event. She and Jake went arm in arm, throwing loving glances at each other and holding one another close.

Morgan walked a couple of paces behind them. She didn’t exactly blend in, being the only woman in pants at the event, wearing minimal or no make up, and having a suspicious look on her beautiful face but she didn’t seem self-conscious at all. Leigh allowed herself to forget Morgan’s presence as she caught up with old acquaintances, ate and drank, and danced with Jake, as well as a variety of other men.

One or two women asked her to dance, too, but Leigh politely turned them down. If word of her dancing with a woman got back to her mother, she would be in trouble. Even if she tried to explain that she had just been being polite, it would lead to a huge fight. Anything that so much as hinted at gay was a cardinal sin in her mother’s book.

Leigh found herself sneaking glances at Morgan throughout the evening. Her hair was shiny and neatly tied up off her face in a high ponytail and the look suited her. She carried herself in a way that was somehow graceful but also promised violence to anyone who might mess with her—and by extension, Leigh.

Leigh didn’t like to admit it, but she felt safer with Morgan here, at least physically. Her secrets, however, were far from safe with Morgan so nearby and she needed to remember that.

Morgan followed Leigh to the bathroom and insisted on checking inside the stall before letting Leigh in.

Leigh couldn’t help but indulge in a fantasy as she closed the door between herself and Morgan. If it was anyone else, she would have jumped their bones by now, but this wasn’t just some random woman in a club who didn’t know who she was. Morgan had all the information required to destroy Leigh, should she choose to do so.

Leigh caught herself wondering what it would have been like if she’d met Morgan during one of her clandestine trips to gay bars. They would certainly have had sex, should Morgan prove willing. Would they have taken it further? Would they have seen each other for longer than one night?

Of course, the situation now was all wrong for that kind of thing. Even if Morgan was willing, sleeping with her bodyguard would be a bad idea, not least because Morgan was being paid to be in Leigh’s life. If she could be paid to guard Leigh, she could be paid to betray Leigh. She wasn’t truly here for Leigh, like Leigh’s sexual partners were. She was here for the money, and that meant Leigh couldn’t trust her.

Still, Leigh couldn’t resist being a bit naughty. She was still sitting on the toilet with her panties down around her ankles. she brought her hand to her clit, touching it lightly. Her own response took her by surprise. Her body surged and her mind provided filthy images of Morgan tying her up and having her wicked way with her.

Leigh felt her face going bright red, but she wasn’t embarrassed enough to stop. She started rubbing herself until a soft whimper escaped her lips.

“Leigh? Are you alright?”

Leigh’s hand flew away from her clit. “I’m fine.”

She quickly pulled her lace panties up and smoothed her dress down before opening the door. Morgan gave her a questioning look, but Leigh simply went to wash her hands. She hoped she wasn’t as red in the face as she felt. Had Morgan figured out what she was doing? Even if she did, she surely couldn’t know what thoughts Leigh had been having, right?

Leigh finished washing her hands and went back to the main room without looking at Morgan. She could hear Morgan’s quiet footsteps following along behind her.

Morgan was clearly not happy with the answers Leigh had given her, because every moment Leigh wasn’t dancing, Morgan cornered her to continue what was feeling increasingly like an interrogation.

Leigh was exhausted by the constant questions. It wouldn’t be bad if she could just answer them honestly, but she had to dodge a lot of Morgan’s queries, which was clearly leaving Morgan as frustrated as it was leaving Leigh.

Morgan kept pushing, though. Leigh didn’t know whether to be annoyed or impressed. Morgan clearly cared about her job and didn’t want to let anything get in the way of protecting Leigh—even Leigh herself. That, however, was small comfort when Leigh went to get a drink and found Morgan ready with another round of questions.
