What would happen after Morgan caught whoever was after Leigh? Leigh had complete faith that Morgan would do so, sooner or later. After that, she’d be on to her next job. Would she and Leigh stay together, or was what they had more a thing of convenience, a brief moment of pleasure while circumstances had them living in the same home?

Leigh knew she should just bite the bullet and start the conversation, but she was afraid—afraid that Morgan didn’t feel the same way. What if Morgan gently told her that she had never thought of what they had as anything more than extremely hot sex? Leigh didn’t know how her heart would survive it.

Of course, delaying wasn’t going to help anything, but Leigh wanted to hold onto this beautiful, fragile moment in time while they still had it.

“Leigh? Earth to Leigh? Are you alright?”

She blinked to find Jake waving is hand in front of her face. “Sorry, Jake, what were you saying?”

“Nothing important. I’m more interested in what has you so zoned out.”

Leigh sighed. “It’s Morgan,” she admitted.

“Are things not going well between the two of you?”

Leigh glanced down the corridor to check that Morgan was still in the shower before turning back to Jake. “Things are going very well; that’s just it. I really like her, Jake. Like, a lot.”

“And you’re scared.”

Leigh nodded miserably.

“I felt the same with Mike at first. It’s a good thing, Leigh. Being scared means you’re invested.”

“Being invested means I’m liable to get my heart broken.”

“Or it means you could get your heart made whole in a way only your soulmate can do. Morgan could be the one for you.”

“I think she might be,” Leigh admitted. “I just don’t know if she feels the same.”

“Talk to her. That’s the only way you’re going to figure this out.”

“I can’t, at least not yet. I need to be able to look her in the eye when I ask her to be mine, and to do that… I think I need to come out.”

Jake stiffened. “You know why that’s not an option.”

“It’s not an option now, but Morgan had an idea. I have money, at least until Amanda disowns me. I could use that money to study, to get some good skills under my belt. That way, when I do come out and she disowns me, I can get a job and support myself.”

“What about me?” Jake’s usually easy-going tone had suddenly turned icy. “Did you think of that, Leigh? If you come out, my family is sure to figure out our ruse. They’ll never speak to me again.”

“That’s easy enough to solve. I’ll pay for you to study, too. We’ll both get jobs at the end of this. Working will take some adjustment, but it’ll be worth it if we can be who we are to the world.”

“That’s not your decision to make, not for me! It’s not just about the money, Leigh. I don’t want to be exiled from my family. I’ll never be able to see my nieces and nephews again. I’ll be completely alone in the world. I’ll be as good as dead to them. I don’t want that.”

“If they can’t accept you for who you are, then they don’t deserve to have you in their lives.”

“Again, that’s not your choice to make. They’re my family, and I get to decide whether or not I want them in my life. Sure, they may not be perfect, but they’re still the people who raised me and I still love them. I know you’re not close with your mom, but you know how close I am with my family. I can’t believe you’d ask me to give that up. It’s not your choice to make.”

“I don’t get to make the choice for you as to whether or not you come out, but whether I come outismy choice, Jake!”

“And your choice affects me! We’re supposed to be in this together, Leigh! We agreed from the start that we’re in this for life. Coming out isn’t in the cards for either of us, ever.”

“Yeah, well maybe I’ve changed my mind.”

“You’re being selfish,” Jake accused.

“You’re being controlling,” Leigh shot back.

The two of them glared at each other for several long moments before Jake turned and stormed out of the room.
